This started out as a prequel novella but morphed into a full blown novel. I'm so glad it did. Kat Bridges in on the run. It's 18 months since she's been hiding out from an assassin that killed her friend and then came after her because she saw him. The FBI thought they could protect her. She had to watch her own funeral and when things blew up, literally she ran. Kat had a hard life and it finally was going well with an adoptive family that loved her for her. Now she's had to let them think she's dead to protect them while she hides from a killer. Renting a house on a short term lease she settles in for a few months until she can earn enough money to move again. Unfortunately Murphy Dolan owns the house and when he shows up  after finishing his 2nd tour in the Army reserves things get hairy. Murph is exhausted and injured and burned out. All he wants to do is get home and fall in his bed and sleep and then start getting his health and life back together. Only problem is his bed is occupied by a half naked Kat.  Once Murph can get Kat to explain why she's there and what's she's afraid of it doesn't take him long to decide he wants to help her. He starts teaching her to defend herself and fixes up the house with tons of security. All the while though he becomes more and more attracted to her.  He's also fighting his own demons from his time at war and his injuries.  While Murph tries to figure out if the assassin  is really after Kat or if he's imagining it, both are also trying to figure out what's going on between them as well.  Then a killer sneaks in and steals Kat and it's a race to get to her before it's to late. Fast paced and action packed! Dana Marton knows now to put the thrill into her suspense. She keeps you guessing right til the end. 4 out of 5 stars for Deathwatch by Dana Marton.

Skye was this phenomenal dancer and he knew for her to succeed he needed to let her go. It killed him to do that but he did. What he didn't know is she would have given up everything to be with him. Ten years later though she comes to him as a last resort because she thinks someones been stalking her and possibly trying to kill her.  Trace has his own security firm and has connections and is rich now. He takes over Skye's lief pretty much to find out what's going on.  Who is the stalker? Is there a stalker? There is so much packed into these pages. Lots of secrets to unravel and a mystery or two. Can love last after so many years apart and so much hurt? This is action packed. Cynthia Eden drags you right into the middle of it. We met Simon in book one and got a little more of him in book two when the woman he had been involved with was murdered. Now he finds himself face to face with a woman who looks quite a bit like Lana, the woman he lost and she is a psychiatrist as well just like Lana. Now what? He's stuck with her shadowing him on the job but being close to her is dangerous for various reasons he doesn't want to think about to closely. Nina doesn't really want to shadow Simon she is a giver though and is guilted into helping out her boss to shadow Simon and observe the how the police deal with suspects who suffer from mental illness.  Both Simon and Nina have things in their pasts they are struggling with. Simon's ex-girlfriends murder and Nina's sisters suicide and the suicide of a young patient a few years ago. Unfortunately things turn deadly when homeless men turn up dead and with initials carved in their backs which looks like someone is after Nina. Simon thinks he knows who is doing it but things are not adding up after a while. This is is a raw thrill ride of suspense, mystery and murder. The author kept me guessing the whole book. I could never get a good bead on who the killer could be and was surprised at the outcome. Most times you can usually get idea where things are going but Virna DePaul doesn't even give you a inkling. All the books in this series are like this. The thriller/suspense part of this book is in full evidence in this book but the romantic sexy side is equally delicious. 4 out of 5 stars for Shades of Passion by Virna Depaul.

Wow I have read several book by Catherine Mann and she always delivers a action packed story with plenty of action and romance mixed together. Stella Carson meets Jose James while on a mission. One look in his eyes and she's hooked. After 5 great months together though it all comes crashing down when they discover there are a few things they can't compromise on when it comes to being together forever so it ended. A month later though Jose finds himself saving Stella from a kidnapping situation and what follows is a lot of revelations about each other, a deadly traitor in their mists and a missing person who might not really be missing. This is a action packed fast paced book once it gets going. There are multiple things going on so sometimes you really have to pay attention.  I figured out a few things before they happened but it was still a thrill ride to the end! 4 out of 5 Stars for Free Fall by Catherine Mann.

I have no idea why but when i saw this cover i just had to read this book. I like my romantic suspense but not so much when there is a lot of killing in them. It's more of a thriller is some ways than a romantic suspense. In any case it turned out to be a damn good mix. If i could have blocked out the time to read this in one sitting i would have. It didn't take me long to realize i was really going to enjoy this book. If after 3 chapters you don't want to put it down to do anything it's probably going to be a keeper. There is so much going on in this book but the pace is great. It's not too fast not too slow. The characters are complex and fleshed out. I always like to think i can figure out who the killer is when reading a book like this and for a while your sure it's Michael like it's supposed to be. Then the doubts come. lol I know i was off a time or two and thought there was a twist coming i could see but it wasn't what i thought.  Cynthia Eden keeps you guessing. Not only about the killer but the characters as well. Lots of suspicion and doubts among her characters. The only put off for me and it was slight is i felt the book went on a little to long.  That's it and it really wasn't a big factor at all for me. Would i recommend this book to a friend? Heck yes! It's a thrill ride for sure. 5 out of 5 stars for Die For Me by Cynthia Eden.

This is the second book for author JB Lynn. Her books so far are complex. She has so much going on but it's not confusing. It's laid out nicely in a good pace that you can follow and savor as you go. I didn't know what to expected based on the title and cover and the brand spanking newness of this author. Was it a thriller? Seemed like it might be since the last one was. OK but the blurb mentions a talking lizard so maybe it's funny too??? Ha it's a mix of both. There are some dark sad elements going on in this book and some suspicious characters too but it's God or Godzilla if you want his full name that brings the funny to this book. Every time Maggie talks to the lizard or refers to him as God i want to crack up. The thriller part comes from what Maggie has to do to help her niece get the medical care she needs. Of course getting paid to be a hitwoman and kill someone isn't exactly something Maggie knows how to do. She gets help from a two side guy who is both hot cop and secret hitman for hire. Patrick is supposed to teach her the ropes so she can get the job done and help her niece. There is something going on between them but you can never quite put your finger on it. Things don't well with the hit though and Patrick decides he has to help her out of the mess. This is one of the most interesting books I have read in a while. I hated to see it end but the author leaves it open at the end  for the possibility of more books. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Stars for Confessions of a Neurotic Hitwoman by author JB Lynn.

1. Please tell us about Confessions of a Neurotic Hitwoman. How did you come up with the idea for this book but particularly for the talking lizard Godzilla or God for short.


I can’t describe the novel in a sentence or two, so here’s the official blurb:

Poor Maggie Lee, must decide she’s willing to become a contract killer in order to earn enough money to provide her hospitalized niece with the best medical care money can buy. Quite the dilemma isn’t it? Does doing something “wrong”, for all the “right” reasons, make it okay?

That’s where the invention of Godzilla came in. I wanted a character to embody how crazy Maggie’s life has become. He’s the character who is her closest confidant…it’s not like she could go and tell a friend or family member about what she’s contemplating. He’s a royal pain in the butt, but he’s the one who questions her choices and nudges her along when she needs it.

Plus, being a lizard, he’s portable and can come along on her adventures. You couldn’t sneak a ferret or chinchilla into a hospital room unnoticed.


2. What got you started in writing? Influences?

I love stories. I was the kid in grade school who’d rather write a story than draw a picture. I’ve always been writing…it just took me a way to work up to adding “novelist” to my repertoire.

I know you’re probably looking for me to name known authors when you ask influences, but this book was influenced by people I know: a single mom, with an autistic child, who still manages to find things in life to laugh at; a writer who writes the book of her heart, instead of trying to figure out what the market will bear; the friend struggling to rebuild her life after awaking from a medically-induced coma. Life hasn’t been fair to these people, but over and over again, they do their best. They keep trying. I wanted to imbue Maggie with those traits, because they’re what I admire in real life.

3. What genre's do you write and how did you decide on these?

Ha! What genre do you think Confessions is? I’ve heard it called “romantic suspense”, “humorous crime fiction” and “chick lit”. It’s also been compared to the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich…except way twisted. So I guess I write in some combination of those. I intentionally didn’t want to pigeon-hole the story while writing it, so I didn’t give it a label or write for a certain market.

I just wrote a story I’d want to read. It’s definitely different, but I don’t think that makes it any less entertaining.
4. How do you find your ideas for stories? I find your work very interesting and different and so i wonder how you do it.

Hmmm….that’s a really good question. I wish I knew the answer, lol. I’d like to say I’ve got some sort of system for capturing ideas, but usually it’s a result of paying attention to what my subconscious is trying to tell me. Usually it comes to me in disjointed bits, once I can connect them, all Is golden.



Confessions came together like this:
Piece One: A few years ago I wrote the sentence: “You know it’s going to be a bad day when Death pulls up behind you in a station wagon.” I had NO CLUE what it meant, but I wrote it down and kept it in my ideas file. I kept revisiting it, but couldn’t figure out the story that went with it. It’s now the opening line of the book.

Piece Two: A friend told me I should write something with the snarky voice I usually only reveal to those closest to me. A person saying the things I think might come across as bitchy, but have the same dialogue coming out of the mouth of a know-it-all lizard and all of the sudden it’s pretty funny.

Piece Three: A local news story started me wondering how someone might become a contract killer.

5. What's your process. Do you plot it all out or fly by the seat of your pants and hope it all works out?

I won’t start a book without knowing how it’s going to end. I always plot out the biggest and most important scenes, for every major character, ahead of time. I put it all on a chart. I doubt anyone could possibly figure out what my charts mean. For Confessions I plotted the main story, Maggie’s internal journey, Godzilla’s story, Patrick’s story, Armani’s story, Paul’s story, the aunts, Alice, Gary the Gun, and Delveccio.

Even with doing all that, I’m open to inspiration if it happens to show up. Without giving anything away, I’ll say that the whole Doomsday bit was a pleasant surprise that didn’t show up until I’d already written the first third of the book.



6. Name 3 things that people would be surprised to know about you.

1) I can put eye make-up on with my mouth closed.

2) I can wink both eyes.

3) I’ve never seen Titanic….and yet my heart still goes on…

Book review: Last Spy Standing by Dana Marton

This is another face paced actioned packed adventure book from Dana Marton. There are no wasted pages or words in this book. Mitch and Megan are both the good guys but neither one knows that about the other.
Megan works for the CIA and has been undercover for a year. She has another hidden agenda for her mission as well. Her brother is held captive she believes by a major bad guy and she needs to get into his compound to find him. Mitch has a mission two get a snot nosed kid ( by his standards) out of the compound of a drug lord that Megan has infiltrated for the past year. He breaks him out but Megan gets him back and a kind of tug of war goes on through the whole book.  Somehow Dana Marton gives a bigger book feel to a short page book. I don't know how she does it but it works. There was a sad surprise at the end that broke my heart but you also get the happy ending you hope for. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Last Spy Standing by Dana Marton.

This is a brand new series by Jaci Burton called The Killer series. The heart of a Killer is book one. On her website she doesn't have any info on the next book so I'm not sure how this series will go. If the characters from book one will be in book two and so on. Time will tell. For this book  I have to say I have not read anything like this from Jaci before. I am only familiar with some of her contemporary books. This one was good but here and there i got kind of bored. Just a smidge though. In the beginning of the book starts with a prologue that explains how the main characters know each other as teenagers first, bonded as friends that ends with a terrifying ordeal and a death. Anna and Dante are a item and he just picks up and leaves it seems after the ordeal.  The book picks up after that 12 years later with Dante coming back after being gone for those 12 years and another murder. This book is heavy on thrilling suspense and light on romance.  It definitely leans more to the suspense. There are several murders that surprised me and the killer was a surprise as well. I had a suspect in mind but then he ended up dead so when i thought i had it maybe figured out i was wrong. lol This is a good sign in a book. If you can figure it out before your halfway through where's the fun? I can honestly say i was surprised and a bit shocked by who the killer was. You start liking your characters it sucks when they are not what you thought. I am excited to see where Ms. Burton goes with this series.  Aside from being bored a few times it was a great read with well written characters and a good plot. Review: This is a beautifully written, incredibly rich mystery novel set in a quiet country village where a series of murders is taking place. The story has a claustrophobic feel, from the tiny village of tiny cottages, to the long dark nights of midwinter. The village is surrounded by steep hills, and the residents are a collection of depressing individuals. And they seem to be suffering from an unusually high number of tragedies. Serial killers, paralysis-causing accidents, dementia, drunken veterans with missing limbs, etc etc. Jonas himself has given up an exciting police career to care for his beloved wife, Lucy, who is dying of MS. His parents are dead, and he has mysterious trauma from his childhood. He works, takes care of Lucy, and also does all the housework. And now a killer is getting busy in Shipcott, killing off people Jonas has known his entire life.

With the bleak setting of the story, the grisly crime mystery, and the depressing characters, you might think the book would be depressing, too. But the author is a master at quirky insights, unique turns of phrase, and dark, tongue-in-cheek humor. She sprinkles the story with pop-culture references, primarily to television shows and horror movies. I snickered more than once while reading. However, shortly after the first murder I was pretty sure I knew who had done it and why, but the answer was so cliched and overused I hoped I was wrong. I wasn't. Sigh.............. . But, I will say the entire book is well worth reading.


I can't go into much more detail without giving away some of the secrets of this novel. I highly recommend it for the well-crafted mystery, the marvelously cloying atmosphere and the darkly humorous character insights.

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion and review.

My favorite genre these days is romantic suspense. I have only experienced this genre from a few authors so when the opportunity to read a debut book from a new author i was happy to volunteer to read it. First Victim is the debut novel by author JB Lynn. Let me start with the blurb as a introduction to the book.

I really enjoyed this book but  there was more suspense than romance in this one. It was more chilling than  most romantic suspense i have read but i was still drawn into it. You have to remember that i also have not read a lot of different authors that write romantic suspense so this romance/suspense equation for this book might be the norm for a lot of other romantic suspense readers. That being said i really liked this book. The suspense was damn suspenseful and quite scary. lol  Half way through or so i suspected who the bad guy was but i was never sure to closer to the end and still surprised in what was really going on and who the real bad guy is.
