ARC Book review: Before We Kiss (Fool's Gold #14) by Susan Mallery

Available May 27th 2014
ebook provided by publisher through Netgalley

Former pro-football kicker Sam Ridge has notoriously bad luck with women—from cheaters to fame chasers. Still, the gorgeous brunette at the bar in Fool's Gold looks harmless—until she takes him home and he discovers a room devoted to securing a man, for life.

Dellina Hopkins never guessed that storing gowns from a friend's bridal boutique would chase away her first and only fling. After her parents died, she skipped her "wild youth" to raise her sisters. She doesn't want forever from Sam, but one night—all night—would've been nice.

His clean getaway gets messy when his firm hires Dellina to plan an event. As long hours lead to late nights, the two succumb to temptation again. Has Sam's luck finally changed? Or this time, will Dellina be the one to run?

Somehow and i know i have said this before Susan Mallery keeps this series fresh. No idea how but she does. How she keeps track of everything and everyone. Again no idea. I think she must be the real life Mayor Marsha. She has to be. lol Anyway in this book we finally get a story for Dellina and Sam. Both have had interesting and in different ways difficult lives. Dellina had to finish raising her twin sisters when their parents passed away unexpectedly. Now they are grown and one married the other on the cusp of marriage. It's time for Dellina to do what she wants for herself. Sam on the other hand had a great football career and now this great job with his friends but his romantic life has always taken a hit. He can't seem to find the right woman and every woman he is interested in turns out to be his next relationship disaster. When Dellina and Sam hook up and Sam finds a room in her house filled with wedding dresses he doesn't even give Dellina two seconds to explain. He's dressed and out of there. Five months later  after all of that time spent trying to avoid her he needs her party planning help for a big party for the PR firm he's a partner in.  Since he waits til he's desperate to finally go to her he feels a little silly once she tells him why the gowns were there and what her expectations for them were.  They start planning the party but it doesn't take long to figure out they are still attracted to each other and enjoy each others company in general.  This is a fun story with one of Dellina's sisters trying to get her boyfriend to propose again and Sam's parents making an unexpected appearance. Not so unexpected when it's discovered that Dellina brought his mother in to be the speaker for the party they are planning. She didn't know she was his mother. Things get crazy. His parents are not your run of the mill parents and you'll find yourself waiting for what they might do next.  The path to Sam and Dellina's HEA is fun and unexpected. Like i said above Susan Mallery keeps the series fresh. She sets us up with future characters in each book. You don't know where those characters are going to end up but it's interesting to see how she weaves the previous characters with the current ones. If you are like me i love to see the previous characters pop in here and there. We don't want to let them go. Why would we?

ARC book review: When We Met (Fool's Gold #13) by Susan Mallery

Available now!
ebook provided by publisher through Netgalley

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can't be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool's Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he's not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe to toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

Susan Mallery's Fools Gold series is going strong with this 13th book in the series. I  have no idea how she keeps it fresh and keeps track of all the coming and going in this series but the results are easy to see.

Angel Whittaker stepped into Fool's Gold in a cloud of mystery. When he first appeared he was  scarred and dark with a "don't even look at me" vibe. He seemed pretty untouchable. Turns out there is a reason for him putting off that vibe. Angel lost his wife and child while serving  in the military.  He feels guilty for not being there when they needed him.  He got out and now he's in Fools Gold with his friends from his military days to start a body guard business. Something he can use his skills for and  have some kind of a life. Taryn Crawford comes to Fool's Gold with her PR business Score. Her ex-husband and two  other ex-football players put the business together and they recently moved from the big city. Taryn is a big city girl and not happy to be out in small town america.  Fool's Gold is way to sappy for her and she can't get over the fact that people do things for each other just because and not to get something in return. A concept she doesn't understand.  Then Taryn meets Angel and sparks fly. He tells her they are inevitable! No matter how cool Taryn seems on the inside she's all fluff which becomes apparent when she teams up with Angel to help a Acorn troop of girls. Angel is a bit appalled at first that he's going to be taking on a pack  of little girls but with Taryn there to hold his hand he finds it's very worth while. It's interesting to see these two make their way to each other. Both have pretty big walls up around themselves but they slowly chip them away.  When Taryn commits the ultimate mistake in a relationship that's not supposed to be a relationship it just might be over for good. Susan Mallery's Fools Gold series is going strong with this 13th book in the series. I  have no idea how she keeps it fresh and keeps track of all the coming and going in this series but the results are easy to see. Amazing character's with real feel relationships and sexy loves scenes and a sense of family.

ARC ebook review: The Mutt and the Matchmaker: A Matchmaker Mystery Novella by JB Lynn,

Available now!
ebook provided by author

When private investigator Tom Hanlon agrees to help out his elderly neighbor by taking her Maltese to the dog park, he has no idea he’s about to meet semi-psychic, wanna-be-matchmaker Armani Vasquez.

Or that the pushy woman will insist on setting him up with quirky dog walker Jane Bly – his main suspect in a string of home burglaries -- and her high-strung, foster mutt, Calamity.

Or that he’ll fall head-over-heels for one of them.

Will Tom catch the thief, or will it be his heart that’s stolen?

First off this is a spin-off from the Hitwoman series.  I was pretty excited when i figured this out.  It doesn't take long for Armani Vasquez to show up in this story.  Armani is Maggie's friend in the Hitwoman series also written by JB Lynn. Armani is psychic  of course and she's matchmaking in this story. Jane Bly comes in contact with Armani when she gets in a fender bender and has to report it to her insurance agency. Tom meets Armani at the dog park and if you read the Hitwoman series you'll recognize her dog possibly. After setting Tom and Jane up on a blind date of sorts the two of them take it from there. Jane thinks Tom is a sweet guy at first then he starts throwing out mixed signals. Tom is a PI and he's investigating Jane for break in in the neighborhood where his aunt lives and Dog walker Jane works. Tom runs into problems because he is attracted to Jane but he's been hurt before and that clouds everything he does these days. It's fun to watch the two of them struggle through their feelings and misgivings and to Armani at work. She doesn't just set them up she has to come by and push a time or two. This was a really fun and enjoyable read. You can sit back and relax and enjoy a great evening of reading with this novella.

ARC book review: No Accounting for Cowboys (The Grady Legacy #2) by Leah Braemel

Available May 19th Today!
ebook provided by publisher

Jake Grady loves Bull's Hollow ranch and all the challenges and hard work it entails. But the past year hasn't been easy—his father's good name has been tarnished, and new financial problems are threatening to destroy everything the Gradys have built. Performing live under a stage name has become his escape, a way of blowing off some serious steam.

Accountant Paige Reynolds found Jake's guitar-playing alter ego intriguing, but her connection with the real Jake sends her attraction into overdrive. When she's summoned to make order out of the chaotic paper trail at Bull's Hollow, he sets her world a-rocking—both in bed and out. But Paige has a plan; she's determined to create her own path for the future, but is soon left scrambling for firmer ground.

Good news about Jake's potential singing career is followed by the revelation of another family secret, one that has him questioning whether he belongs at Bull's Hollow at all. But leaving the ranch would mean leaving his family…and Paige. How much is he willing to give up for a real shot at fame?

This is the 2nd book in the Grady Legacy series. After reading book one i wondered what Jake's story was. He was a bit of a mystery. Jake is a lot more than he seems. In book one he came across as a bit lazy and irresponsible but now you can see that's not true. At the beginning of this book he's struggling with his best friend hating him, the ranches financial troubles and a brother who can't seem to take him seriously. He's still reeling from what his mother did and the results of him keeping her secrets.  Then there is Paige. Her past is not a good and happy one. Her mother in prison and a dad who didn't ever really want her. It seems to follow her around no matter what she does. Her one good point in  her life is her aunt Reba who offers her a job in her accounting business.  Paige gets assigned to be the new accountant for the Grady's to sort out the mess their financials are in. Jake and Paige hit it off right away. Paige wasn't looking for forever but she finds herself in love pretty quick. Jake  seems to be feeling the same way but when the band he's in gets offered a record deal he's not sure their relationship can survive long term.  This was a fun and sometimes intense story. Jake has had to deal with so much in the past year and meeting Paige is his saving grace. She calms him and supports him in everything. Paige is kind of a broken woman in a lot of ways. Her pasts haunts her almost daily and she puts on a front to protect herself but she still manages to open herself up to Jake. Of course when a big secret is revealed Jake almost blows everything. This story will entertain you and also find it's way into your heart by the last page.  Can't wait to see what happens with Gabe, Ben and Jake's half brother in the next book.

ebook provided by publisher through Netgalley

In need of fast cash to help her brother sneak into the US, Tova Sorenson takes a job as a sexcam operator, sparking an unlikely friendship with her very first customer. When Marcus Lucero's border patrol teammate suggests a sexcam site for female companionship without heartache, Marcus figures he's got nothing to lose.

While danger from Tova's dark side brings them together in the flesh where their chemistry burns hotter than hell, it also exposes their divergent loyalties which could end not only their desires, but their lives.

This is a quick paced sexy little novella by Joan Swan. Tova needs money to help her brother get into the US. She herself was born in the US but her brother was not and she wants to help him so he can  be safe.  She's going to college and working as a waitress but it's not enough so she decides to try being a sexcam operator after her friends tells her how good the money is. Marcus is getting burned out at his job and working to hard ever since one of his fellow border patrol agents was killed. ARC book review: All Fired Up (DreamMakers #1) by Vivian Arend , Elle Kennedy

Available now!

Ebook provided by publisher
He’s ready to lead the way

Parker Wilson never thought he’d go from battle-hardened soldier to romance expert, but after his stint in the Rangers, that’s exactly what happened. As the owner of DreamMakers Inc., he helps other men win in the love department, using every resource available to plan the perfect date. When a routine recon turns into an unexpected night of passion, Parker’s mission becomes more personal—and he won’t give up until Lynn Davidson is all his.

She’s more than willing to follow

Lynn is a goner from the moment she lays eyes on the delectable Parker. She’s just ditched her boring almost-boyfriend and is tired of sticking to the straight and narrow. It’s time to walk on the wild side, and what better way than in the arms of the most irresistible man she’s ever met? But when their red-hot affair is threatened, it’ll take a team effort to make their dreams come true.

In a unlikely premise we have 3 bad ass ex military guys running a dating help business. They help clueless guys set up awesome dates for their girlfriends or wives. Kind of a interesting idea really. The guys get a new customer who is a real scumbag. He knows nothing about his girlfriend but wants them to help him set up awesome date so he can propose. They really don't want to help him but go ahead with it and start doing a little surveillance of the girlfriend Lynn since they get no info that's helpful about her from the boyfriend. Parker makes contact with her at a yoga class and likes her.  Little later Lynn who works at the same place as her boyfriend catches him cheating on her and she decides she is done with him.  Lynn and her friends go out to a club and Parker and Dean ( one of the other partners in the business) are there still doing surveillance on her when they find out she's broken up with the boyfriend. This opens the door for Parker and even though he feels funny about it he walks on through that door.  This was a overall interesting read. I liked the idea of the guys helping other guys with date the kicker is that they are ex military alpha's. There is actually a menage in this story which was a surprise to me but done well and there is even some suspense when something happens to Lynn and Parker has to find her and rescue her. The secondary characters were all interesting and i am excited to see what comes from those characters in the next couple of books in the series. Definitely look forward to revisiting this series.

ARC Book review: Mercy (Holton Woods, Book #1) by HelenKay Dimon

Available now!
ebook provided by publisher through netgalley

After she infiltrated his business and betrayed his trust, a disavowed CIA agent must seek sanctuary in the bedroom of a man who will either help her, kill her, or bring her to her knees…

Becca Ford is on her own. Eight months after she headed up a sting operation to take down millionaire club owner Jarrett Holt, the other agents in her special ops team have been eliminated under odd circumstances, and she needs a place to hide.

Jarrett is a man who prefers darkness to light. He deals in the only truly valuable currency—information—and his supper club caters to an exclusive clientele. It was an uncharacteristic moment of weakness when he let a woman into his life. But it’s not luck that the criminal charges disappeared . . . as did the evidence.

When Becca returns to the club seeking his help, Jarrett doesn’t want to hear her story. But he does want her body, and demands that she give it to him. He’ll keep her safe—for now—but it’ll be in his bed and on his terms, until he says they’re done.

First this is NOT a romantic suspense which HelenKay Dimon is known for this is a erotica with a little romantic suspense. I believe this is HelenKay Dimon first foray into erotica and she gets started right away in this book with a bang!  Jarrett Holt is a self made man. He had a crappy crappy childhood but brought himself up out of that to where he is now. Plenty of a money two solid friends who have his back when needed and his club among other things. Eight months ago he thought he was in pretty serious relationship with Becca Ford. It took a lot for Jarrett to trust her to the extent he did and then she betrayed him and lied to him. Becca Ford works for the CIA and Jarrett was a mission a job that is until she really did fall for him. Unfortunately it started to look like he was dealing drugs and when her mission got cut short and they decided to arrest Jarrett she was so mixed up by what she thought was going on and her feelings for him she was pretty much useless for a while. Jarrett gets himself out of prison and 8 months later Becca finds herself on the run when every person on her team back then ends up dead or attacked in some way. She crawls almost literally back to Jarrett because she needs his help to figure out what's going on. The whole of this book takes place at Jarrett's club which is kind of strange in a way but i honestly never thought a lot about it until someone else mentioned it. There is no opening for anyone to go anywhere though throughout the book.  Jarrett takes Becca in because no matter what she did to him he loves her but can't hardly admit that to himself in the beginning. They have to start over from scratch building trust and it's hard for either one to do that. Becca had a childhood about as bad as Jarrett's so and with her job trust and opening up is especially hard so the two of them bang heads and bodies lol alot in this story. There are some secondary characters in this book that are interesting major players still in this story and i'm wondering  what the author will do with them in future books. It's takes them all to figure out whose behind the killing of Becca's team. I wanted to hate Jarrett. I get why he was the way he was and as a reader i am privy to Becca's thoughts and he is not of course, but wow he was harsh. I love the way Becca stays tough and doesn't give up on him and how she gets her gumption back at the end and takes back her own sense of self and power. Jarrett comes through at the end in his own way and you have to love him for his sacrifices. An amazing intense story with hotter than hot sex scenes.  Great start to a series and awesome first official erotica for HelenKay Dimon. Book two is out later this fall.

ARC Book review: Hell for Leather (Black Knights Inc. #6) by Julie Ann Walker

Avail;able now!
ebook provided by publisher through netgalley

Only the most urgent crisis could force Delilah Fairchild to abandon her beloved biker bar and ask the surly Bryan "Mac" McMillan for help. Her uncle—the man who raised her—has vanished into thin air, and Mac is the only person with the right connections to help her find him. What the ex-FBI agent has against her is a mystery...but when the bullets start to fly, Mac is her only chance of finding her uncle alive.

Mac knows that beautiful women can't be trusted, but he has to put his natural wariness of Delilah aside in order to help her. With the clock ticking, Mac and Delilah find themselves holding on to each other in the wildest adventure of their lives.

I've really been enjoying the Black Knights Inc series by Julie Ann Walker for a while. If you have been reading the books you know exactly who Mac and Delilah are. The last couple books in this series you've been teased with little bits of them well it's finally time to see them sizzle right off the page. Delilah's uncle disappears and she's looking for Mac and the Black Knights Inc to help her find him. At first it didn't seem like it was going to be that big a deal and then someone tries to kidnap Delilah. From there things pick up and we finally get to see Steady and Ozzie out in the field when they join Mac and Delilah along with Zoelner. They don't realize at first who they are up against until the CIA gets involved and agent Chelsea Duvall shows up which does weird things to Zoelner as they used to be friends back in his CIA days. Again if you've read previous books you will have read a little about this before.  While trying to protect Delilah Mac is forced into close quarters with hers something he's been trying to avoid for four years. Delilah, for her part had had bad things being thrown at her constantly but she continues to be strong. This story proves Mac isn't all that he seems. He's such a big tough guy  on the outside but on the inside he's damaged, something you never saw before. He has been letting his past dictate his future and denying himself love. Once Delilah finds out Mac's history she has to formulate a plan with the help of Zoelner to make him see she is worth the risk. It's interesting to see a big bad ass like Mac be vulnerable and Julie Ann Walker did a good job with that. What made this book so enjoyable for me was the witty smart alecky dialogue and the southernisms she puts in this book. "This Place could use a Xanax salt lick", " Is it possible to get the tweeted version of this saga?" or Talk about ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag.  That's just few of the funny bits and pieces of this book. You will have to read the book to find out the rest and there are many and see just how Mac and Delilah mix.

ARC book review: Barefoot in White (The Barefoot Bay Brides Trilogy #1) by Roxanne St. Claire

Ebook provided for a honest review

Available now!

Destination wedding consultant Willow Ambrose has fought a battle with the scale for much of her life, but she has finally won the war. By putting her past behind her and cutting off all contact with anyone who knew her before and, of course, controlling everything she can, Willow has carved out a new body and a new life. But when she comes face to face with someone who left an indelible mark on her heart years before, all that threatens to crumble.

Navy SEAL Nick Hershey is on medical leave, doing a friend a favor as a stand in “man of honor” at a beach wedding. He might not be that interested in the nuptials, but the wedding planner catches his eye the minute they meet. When he realizes Willow is really a girl he knew in college—and a girl he unintentionally hurt to the core—he knows he has some making up to do.

Willow has learned how to beat every temptation...but Nick’s sweet-as-candy kisses just might be the one thing she can’t resist. But the closer they get, the more the past threatens to tear them apart. Can they finally let go of a painful past in order to find a forever future?

This is a brand new trilogy and a spin off of sorts from the Barefoot bay series. Same location so you will see some of the characters from the Barefoot bay series. This trilogy is about a set of three friends who came together as individual wedding planners to create Barefoot  Bay Brides Wedding planners. Each has their own niche on the team. Barefoot in White tells Willow's story. Willow has worked hard to get where she is. She  was a overweight child and put up with a mother who constantly put her down and a dad who turned the other way instead of defending her and a guy she adored turned her down when she threw herself at him in college. Now she's shed all the extra weight, changed her life, found great friends, in a successful business and has cut her parents out of her life as much as she can.  It starts to go awry when that hot guy from college who turned her down for sex walks back into her life. Oh boy she is sex on a stick and a Navy seal too! Nick is doing a favor for a friend when he comes to Barefoot Bay as a stand in maid of honor but he's also recouping from a hearing injury in Iraq and trying to write a book based loosely on it. When Nick figures out who Willow is though everything starts to change for them both. Each has some healing to do but there is someone still in the back ground trying to pull strings and some things Willow doesn't know. It all comes crashing down when someone let's the cat out the bag early.  I really enjoyed this first book in the trilogy. You feel for both Nick and Willow as they struggle to come to grips with their pasts and possible futures and you want to root for them both. The secondary characters are interesting and you really want to smack a few people around a time or two which just shows you how well the characters are fleshed out. Of course this is a romance so there is plenty of funny parts to make you laugh like Naked Nick. You'll have to read the book to find out what that's about. I'm not telling, but it's good!

She never expected she'd willingly give control over to the fierce biker. Maybe she's more like her mother than she imagined…

Debra Kayn takes a little jump in the Bantorous MC series with this book. All the original characters are older and Kurt Ramchett is all grown up and is going to be running his own club franchise in another state.  It's always exciting to see characters grow up and see where they go and we finally see Kurt as a man and in charge. Several years ago Kurt bought some property in Federal, Idaho and now it's finally time to move in and set things up for his new business and the new club. Unfortunately the place they were supposed to live is still occupied by his renter. Risa has papers that say her and her girls have one more year in Kurt's building. Risa runs a adult entertainment place and she employees several girls that put on shows for the local miners.  Sparks fly when Kurt first arrives in town to see Risa putting on her once a month show in the middle of the street! It's instant attraction for Kurt and things get interesting from there.  Los Li is always a danger to Bantorus MC and just when Kurt thinks everything is going well they threaten everything. Fun but thrilling book. New characters with peaks at old characters which is always so awesome. A sizzling hot thrilling ride from the beginning to the end.  Debra Kayn moves us into the next generation of the Bantorus MC without missing a beat!

Excerpt:
She pulled the cell door open. Metal groaned. And his chest pinched when he realized that was it. She was leaving. After not punishing him like he’d expected, but pleasuring him.

“Why?”

It was the only word he could get out. His throat was thick, his brain still foggy, but none of this—none of what she’d done last night when she’d tended his wound or tonight when she’d brought him to a blistering climax—made sense.

She hesitated, one hand on the door handle, one step to freedom. Then she turned her head back into the room, just enough so he could see the supple line of her jaw and the plump perfection of her lips, but she didn't meet his eyes. And like it had before, that feeling she was as much a prisoner as was he, slammed into him.

Which would be worse? To be tortured? Or to be forced to torture others and live with the knowledge of what you've done day after day after miserable day?

“Because I’m not the monster Zagreus is,” she whispered. “Not yet, anyway.”

ARC Book review: Absolute Surrender by Jenn LeBlanc

Available now!

ebook ARC Provided by author for honest review.

Happiness was always too much for Lady Amelia to hope for.

Now all she expects is to secure her future and marry Charles, Duke of Castleberry, as arranged. But Amelia has a dangerous secret that could not only destroy her in Charles's eyes and the eyes of society, but could also very well condemn her to Bedlam.

Baron Endsleigh, Amelia’s oldest friend, has other ideas. Ender has loved Amelia all his life. He knows her secrets, and they don’t frighten him. He plans to come between Amelia and Charles in any way he can to prevent the marriage and finally claim Amelia for his own. Though her father forbade the match years ago, Ender is determined to have her as his wife and nothing can stop him. Not even a duke as powerful as Castleberry.

That duke has hated Baron Endsleigh and wanted Amelia for, what seems to him, forever. Charles will stop at nothing to make her his, and his alone, even if that means destroying the one thing he knows she loves most in this world—Endsleigh.

Will Amelia be able to choose when one man speaks to her head and the other her heart?

Absolute Surrender is the newest release of author Jenn LeBlanc. Her previous book the The Rake and Recluse was a illustrated romance as is this new book. In other words there are pictures to go with the story. I don't know about anyone else but the pictures add more depth to the book by helping to create a visual of the story as we go along. Ms. LeBlanc takes us into a historical romance but with a twist. Well more than one twist actually. First this is an erotic historical romance with 3 people involved. The heroine who has a disability of sorts that her best friend from childhood can only help her manage. Then there is the tag along friend from childhood who is grown up and now wants to marry the heroine. So we have Amelia, the heroine and Ender her best friend and Charles the man she is supposed to marry. Problem is they both want her and she wants them both. Not acceptable in society at the time. Ender is not allowed to marry Amelia but as he is the only one who can help her with her issues he promises Charles to help him with her. The goal at first is to teach Charles to help Amelia the way Ender does but it doesn't go according to plan.  Amelia might the obvious person you see with problems to deal with but you find the Charles and Ender both have their own glaring problems and insecurities. It's heartbreaking to watch it unfold with the right amount of humor to offset the serious parts.  The characters are well written and fleshed out and you can almost feel like you are there. The sex scenes are to die for good and so HOT! If you add in the photos as you are reading it brings everything together for a interesting reading experience.
