Book review: Savor the Danger by author Lori Foster

Savor the Danger is the third book in the "Men who walk the edge of Honor" series by Lori Foster. This is my favorite of the three so far. I say so far because there is going to be a book four in this series. I won't say who that book will be about because i don't want to give anything away from Savor the Danger. If you buy the paperback version i know there is a excerpt to book four because i read it there. The characters for book four get introduced in Savor the Danger though.  How about we start with a blurb now.

Savor the Danger by Lori Foster
June 28th, 2011

The one woman he couldn't have was the only woman he desired…

She may be aloof, and more pretty than gorgeous, but Alani Rivers is the kind of woman a hot-blooded mercenary can't forget, no matter how hard he tries. So when Jackson Savor wakes up next to the naked, sleeping beauty—with no memory of what happened—he knows he's been drugged… even if Alani doesn't.

After she was kidnapped, Alani swore she'd never trust another man again. Still, something about this strong, sexy hero with the tender touch makes her want to believe him. As Jackson hunts downs a mysterious intruder, he swears he'll move heaven and earth to keep Alani safe. But what really happened that night? And will the truth bring them closer than they ever thought possible—or put Alani squarely in harm's way again?

This is one of those books that i knew I'd love the first chapter into it. Poor Jackson Savor has a conundrum. He wakes up in his bed with a beautiful woman in his bed but he can't remember how he ended up there. Once he figures out it's Alani Rivers in his bed his problem becomes decidedly bigger than he at first thought since he's been after her for months. If you read When You Dare  the first book in this series you know that Alani was the victim of a kidnapping by human traffickers. Since then she's been treated with kid gloves by Dare and her brother Trace( Trace if Fever book2). Jackson doesn't think she's that breakable so he treats her differently. Jackson figures out he was somehow drugged and that's why he can't remember the previous day and nights activities. Alani has stormed out hurt he doesn't remember what happened but he tracks her down and talks her into giving them a try. Things get tricky from here as her former boyfriend doesn't want to give her up and then it seems like someone is after Jackson or Alani or maybe bothof them and Jackson and Alani must fight for their lives while falling in love and giving up secrets of their pasts to each other. This book was soooo good I'd recommend it to anyone that's looking for a good summer read. It's got action, love, lust and lots of humorous lines to give you laughs throughout. I love that you get a good dose of Trace and Dare again with small appearances by their now wives Priss and Molly and of course their friend Chris is adorable as ever. You get two newcomers in this book as well bounty hunter Spencer Lark and Arizona Storm. Not going to tell you about them though you'll have to read the book.. I give Savor the Danger 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars.  This book had it all for me. Book review: Catch Me by author Lorelie Brown

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion and review.

Catch me is the first book of Lorelie Brown's that I've had the opportunity to read. I've had some really good luck with new to me authors lately and this was not going to be an exception. Catch Me is a historical romantic western. I haven't read one of these in a while and i wasn't sure i was in the mood. The cover and title if you just look at those are misleading to the premise of the story but once you read the blurb is all makes perfect sense. I kept thinking if she is a criminal how is this supposed to work out in the end? I had decided to try and have faith that the author knew what she was doing by starting the book off with the heroine committing a crime. Here's the blurb so you can see for yourself.

Catch Me by Lorelie Brown
 July 18, 2011

Arizona Territory, 1882

Maggie Bullock's father needed expensive medical care and if that meant stealing from their friendly swindling banker, so be it. Once her father was on the path to recovery she would face the consequences. The whole thing was surprisingly easy until she's kidnapped by bounty hunter Dean Collier.

Collier is tired of tracking down worthless scum. He's afraid he'll lose his last scrap of humanity and become a stone-cold killer, just like the men he brings to justice. He jumps at the chance to become sheriff of Fresh Springs, Arizona. The one condition—capture Maggie.

He figured it'd be easy. Until beautiful, loyal Maggie breaks through defenses he'd thought cemented. His feelings for her run the range from fury to confusion to love, but if he doesn't bring her in someone else will. Can there be a future between a sheriff and a fugitive?

This book started out with the Maggie the heroine robbing the bank. I thought wait wait wait how is this going to be a happy ending book if the heroine commits a crime that will at the very least put her in prison. I calmed down cause i thought well this is the first chapter in the book so something has got to fix this right? There must be a mistake that's going to be explained later like maybe someone was forcing her to rob that bank. I found out at least she feels like she has a good reason for robbing the bank so that appeased me a little. Then we meet Dean who is in of all places jail. lol That made me laugh cause he is supposed to be a bounty hunter and he gets asked to go after Maggie so in a way it's one criminal after another. There are some funny moments in this book, but really both Maggie and Dean have some serious issues to deal with from their pasts. Dean is looking for something to save himself from becoming a stone cold killer and Maggie has been in denial that something has been off in her family for a long time. I can't write this without mentioning Dean's brother Andrew. LOVED Andrew. I am harboring thoughts that he is getting his own book at some point because the author wove some mystery around what he's been doing before he meets up with his brother part way through the book. Dean notices differences in him too. I would love to see this.  In conclusion there is never a dull moment in this book. The sex scenes are hot and the sexual tension between Dean and Maggie is electrifying. Dean is in denial most of the book of his feelings for Maggie.  I did get my happy ending though. You'll have to read the book to see how of course. Read about this book and author Lorelie Brown by clicking here www.loreliebrown.com . I give Catch Me by author Lorelie Brown 4 Modokker Book Pick Stars. Reminded me again how much i love a good historical western.

PS check out that cover too! Wow!

Book review: Nightfall by author Ellen Connor

I received a copy of this from the author for my honest opinion and review.

I have never read a post apocalyptic book before. This is my first and it's technically a paranormal romance. The author Ellen Connor is actually the pen name for two authors, Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty. Until this book i have never read any of their books either. Lots of firsts for me then with this book. Here is a little bit of a blurb to get you started.

Their instincts will save them.

Their passion will transform them.

Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought, in her wildest nightmares, that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her–one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.

The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna’s father. Skilled and steadfast, he’s ready for the Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and the mutant dogs attack–vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong.

When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion–a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age

First i have to admit i had a hard time reading this. I spent some trying to figure out why that was. I really enjoyed the book the writing was excellent. I don't recall seeing any spelling mistakes or names mixed up or things that didn't make sense. The story was really good and action packed and full of suspense. I like that in a book but i think part of the problem was the suspense. I was afraid to find out who might get killed. In this book people get killed. I was surprised by one death and afraid a couple times for other characters. I read some every day for four days but each day i set it down and picked up a comfort read to wind myself down from it i guess. lol  Usually i read a book in one to two days. I loved John Mason the hero of this book and i equally loved Jenna Barclay the heroine. I really liked the first 50 pages that kind of intro the characters and the book and then it started getting heavy. There is no really way to guess how this story is going to go and so it keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering, "What's next"? On the edge right up until the end. I look forward to the next two books in this series. I peeked and they will have characters from the first book in them. To check out this book and read the first chapters as well as the covers and blurbs to the next two book please check out the Ellen Connor website by clicking here www.ellenconnor.com I give Nightfall 4 out of 5 Modokker book pick stars. Lots of sitting on the edge of your seat reading!

Book review: Tangled Past by author Leah Braemel

I received a eARC of Tangled Past from Carina Press through netgalley.com for my honest opinion and review.

I have to admit this is the first time i have ever had the opportunity to read a erotic historical romance. I was pleasantly surprised by Tangled Past by Leah Braemel. Honestly I've never read any of her books before but i kept hearing about this book and her other kind of related release Texas Tangle.  Tangled past is set 130 years before Texas Tangle. I requested a copy of Tangled Past  from netgalley so i could check it out and and was excited to get it. Let's start with my favorite part when checking out a book. The blurb!

Carina Press

Genre: Historical Erotic Romance
Series: Tangled Series
Length: Category Romance (48,000 words)
Format: ebook only
Read More…

1887, Texas

Forced to marry a man she just met, Sarah McLeod clings to the hope that she’ll finally find the love and acceptance she’s always craved. But her tenuous dreams of a happy life on the frontier are in danger of being dashed by the one thing she can’t change—her husband’s love for another man.

Jackson Kellar’s determined to do right by his bride, yet he’s torn between his new found love for Sarah and his still-burning desire for Nate.

Ranch owner Nate Campbell loves them both. He hates to see Jackson’s loyalties so divided, and doesn’t want Sarah hurt either. But how can they fix the tangled mess they find themselves in? Nate suggests a possible solution – a permanent threesome.

With the open frontier closing in around them, is Nate’s solution their path to happiness? Or will others destroy what they’ve found together?

Note from author. This book is inspired by the Barnett family dinner scene in Texas Tangle where Grandma Barnett mentions her grandparents’ marriage. It stands alone and you will not have to have read Texas Tangle to understand it.

I didn't know what to expect when i started this but i was quickly drawn in by the story. It's a historical western that just happens to be erotica as well. I was surprised that the author exposed Jackson and Nate's relationship so fast to Sarah. She finds them together when trying to warn them about what her father is planning against them. They are both half dressed sleeping in her fathers barn and then Jackson gets caught pretty much with his pants down when Sarah's father comes and catches them and forces them to marry. He is glad to get rid of her since he didn't really father her( her father was really a Native American indian). In a way Sarah is happy to get away from her dad(step-dad) and half-brother who have been cruel to her and treated her like a slave and belittled her Native American heritage. Jackson has no place of his own since he is a ranch hand on Nate's Ranch but Nate's doesn't want to lose Jackson so he volunteers his place for the 3 of them to live for now. From here you get to see how the relationship between Jackson and Sarah grows and how Nate will fit into it. I loved how Jackson treated Sarah the first time he takes her to bed. How he teachers her to please him and herself in bed and their love for each other grows. Still Nate is a presence in their lives and Sarah finds she is attracted to him as well. Now what?? That's the big question and after a bad accident severely injures Nate, Sarah  has to decide what will happen next. I have to say i love epilogues in books. Tangled Past has a nice epilogue that tells you how things are years after the book ends. I really enjoyed the book and plan to read the Texas Tangle at first opportunity. Find out the author and this book and read a excerpt at her website by clicking here www.leahbraemel.com . I give Tangled Past 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. Great sex scenes to go with a really good story. What more could you ask for??

Book review: Demon Hunting in Dixie by author Lexie George

Demon Hunting in Dixie is the debut novel by author Lexie George. I read a excerpt of this book i think on Lexie's author page or another blog. I can't remember now unfortunately. The excerpt grabbed me right away and i wanted to read the book. I got lucky and won a copy and so i got to read it this past week. I don't think I've ever read a funny paranormal romance but that's what this is and if you can appreciate the humor like i do you'll love this book too. Here is a little blurb from the book.

Demon Hunting in Dixie

A warrior, a demon, and the girl next door…

Looking For Trouble

Addy Corwin is a florist with an attitude. A bad attitude, or so her mama says, ‘cause she’s not looking for a man. Mama’s wrong. Addy has looked. There’s just not much to choose from in Hannah, her small Alabama hometown. Until Brand Dalvahni shows up, a supernaturally sexy, breathtakingly well-built hunk of a warrior from—well, not from around here, that’s for sure. Mama thinks he might be European or maybe even a Yankee. Brand says he’s from another dimension.

Addy couldn't care less where he’s from. He’s gorgeous. Serious muscles. Disturbing green eyes. Brand really gets her going. Too bad he’s a whack job. Says he’s come to rescue her from a demon. Puh-lease. But right after Brand shows up, strange things start to happen. Dogs talk and reanimated corpses stalk the quite streets of Hannah. Her mortal enemy Meredith, otherwise known as the Death Starr, breaks out in a severe and inexplicable case of butt boils. Addy might not know what’s going on, but she definitely wants a certain sexy demon hunter by her side when it all goes down…

I didn't realize this was going to be a funny book although i could see the humor in the excerpt i read. The whole time i read this book i bugged people around me with the funny lines i was reading. I have two friends who want to borrow it already. I can't say what the best part of the book was for me because i loved it all. It was funny but still had the scarier stuff that comes with demon hunting and the romance too. This was one of the best books I've read in a while. To check out a excerpt go to Lexie Geroge's website by clicking here http://www.lexigeorge.com/. I give Demon Hunting in Dixie 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars.

Book review: First Victim by author JB Lynn

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest opinion and review.

My favorite genre these days is romantic suspense. I have only experienced this genre from a few authors so when the opportunity to read a debut book from a new author i was happy to volunteer to read it. First Victim is the debut novel by author JB Lynn. Let me start with the blurb as a introduction to the book.

Available June 13, 2011 from Carina Press
THE FIRST VICTIM

For fifteen years The Baby Doll Strangler has terrorized the East Coast, abducting teenage girls and leaving their perfectly primped bodies for their families to find.

Fifteen years ago, one girl escaped him.

That girl, now a 31-year-old woman, Emily Wright, believes she has also escaped the memories of her abduction, until a family emergency forces her back to her childhood home to care for her teenage sister.

As she tries to build a relationship with a sister she barely knows, the nightmares of her abduction return. When a girl from her sister's school is kidnapped, killed, and left on Emily’s doorstep, her paranoia goes into overdrive.

Has her kidnapper resurfaced and returned to town too?

Emily must decide who to trust: her girlhood crush Deputy Bailey O’Neill, the FBI agents who have failed to catch the killer in the past, or the only person who has defeated this monster before: herself.

Family secrets and small town rumors abound as the body count escalates and the killer draws closer to the Wright sisters.

Time is running out and Emily must face her fears and unravel the secrets of her own kidnapping before her nightmares come true and she, or her sister, become the next victims of The Baby Doll Strangler.

Emily Wright was kidnapped at the age of 16. Three days later she escaped when by luck Evan Swann a fellow classmate saw her trying to escape and helped her get away. She left town as soon as she could to get away from the memories that haunted her and because her father a psychiatrist insisted she get over the kidnapping like it was that easy. Now 15 years later she gets a phone call that her father has been seriously hurt and she needs to come home for her 15 year old sister. That's where the killer wants her though and so it begins.

I really enjoyed this book but  there was more suspense than romance in this one. It was more chilling than  most romantic suspense i have read but i was still drawn into it. You have to remember that i also have not read a lot of different authors that write romantic suspense so this romance/suspense equation for this book might be the norm for a lot of other romantic suspense readers. That being said i really liked this book. The suspense was damn suspenseful and quite scary. lol  Half way through or so i suspected who the bad guy was but i was never sure to closer to the end and still surprised in what was really going on and who the real bad guy is. To read a excerpt of this book and find out more about the author JB Lynn please click here http://www.jblynn.com/. I give First Victim 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. Available from Amazon and Carina Press.

Free ebook Friday! Dating Mr December by Phillipa Ashley

How about a free ebook for weekend reading? This Friday choice is Dating Mr December by Phillipa Ashley

When a nice girl asks twelve men to get naked, it’s sure to cause a scandal…

Emma Tremayne leaves her high-powered PR job and moves to the Lake District looking for peace, quiet-and celibacy. So perhaps it’s not the best idea when, in the spirit of “community-mindedness,” she agrees to help the local mountain rescue team fund raise by putting together a “tasteful” nude calendar. Especially since quite a lot of the community seems to mind what she’s up to-including the tall, dark and handsome Mr. December, Will Tennant, who appears to have gotten the wrong impression about Emma’s intentions. So how does she convince him that he’s more than just the flavor of the month?
Dating-Mr-December

What's coming on the blog is June

Been a crazy week this week. I only was able to get one review up but it was a great book so that's good. My Internet was out for almost 2 days and i ended up with a different antenna for my Internet a bigger one! Bigger is better right? Then my power went out today for no reason at all. I finally got it back on and here i am. Before the weekend is out I'll have a review of author JB Lynn's debut novel "First Victim". It's a romantic suspense. I am reading another debut "Demon Hunting in the Dixie" by Lexie George that is proving interesting and funny so far. In the next few weeks I'm going to be hopefully be reading,
The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters by Sierra Dean
Merciless by Diane Palmer
Playing Dirty by Susan Anderson
Only Mine  by Susan Mallery ( Fool's Gold series)
Ideal man by Julie Garwood
Probably some others mixed in between as time allows.

Now what are you reading this month? I'd love to hear about it and perhaps add it to my own TBR pile. It's always growing when I'm not paying attention. lol

Book Review: Yours to Keep by author Shannon Stacey

I received a copy of Yours to Keep from Netgalley.com for my honest opinion and review.

Let me start by saying this is the first time i have read anything by author Shannon Stacey. I wasn't sure what to expect but i really like the blurb on netgalley and wanted to read it. I enjoy contemporary romance especially if it has plenty of humor in it. Yours to Keep has that in spades. I did alot of laughing out loud and was reading lines from the book to my husband.  I don't think you have to read the book to get the humor in some of the dialogue so i didn't feel bad reading parts to him even though he had no idea what the story was really about. When a book is that good you just want to share it with anyone who'll listen to you. Trust me i will be talking about this book often for a while. Here's the blurb.

Yours to Keep by Shannon Stacey June 6th 2011
Sean Kowalski no sooner leaves the army than he’s recruited by Emma Shaw to be her fake fiancé. Emma needs to produce a husband-to-be for her grandmother’s upcoming visit, and, though Sean doesn’t like the deception, he could use the landscaping job Emma’s offering while he decides what to do with his civilian life. And, despite his attraction to Emma, there’s no chance he’ll fall for a woman with deep roots in a town he’s not planning to call home.

Emma’s not interested in a real relationship either; not with a man whose idea of home is wherever he drops his duffel bag. No matter how amazing his “pretend” kisses are…

I have to admit i started laughing in the first chapter and continued to either laugh or smile throughout.  Let me give you a line or two from the book. Emma has just served up her best dish Chicken divine which has broccoli. Sean hates broccoli but can't let Emma's grandma Cat know this. Here are the lines. "Suck it up soldier. The broccoli's tree trunk or stalk or whatever people called it squeaked between his teeth, a little undercooked. Or maybe it was supposed to feel like that. Either way he didn't like it, so he swallowed as fast as he could. Then dug up another forkful and did it again". lol. I loved all the characters. Sean has alot of family and they love to torture him just a little throughout the whole ordeal.  This is the third book in the Kowalski series but i didn't feel i missed alot reading it out of order. I will be checking out the first two soon as i can though. The only drawback to this book and series is they are only available as ebooks right now BUT i found out by asking the author that they will be released in mass market paperback beginning January 2012 from Harlequin wherever Harlequin is sold. Want to find out more about Shannon Stacey and how about reading the first chapter? You can go to her website by clicking here www.shannonstacey.com . I give Yours to Keep by author Shannon Stacey 5 out 5 Modokker Book Pick stars.

Book Review: The Creed Legacy by author Linda Lael Miller

I received a copy of this book from netgalley.com for my honest opinion and review.

This is the third installment in the latest group of the Montana Creeds series by Linda Lael Miller. Luckily for me Linda Lael Miller loves to write about cowboys and i love to read about them. This contemporary cowboy romance has just what you need if you crave a sexy Creed, some serious and humorous moments with a happy ending. All cowboy stories should have one of those right? Brody is one of twin brothers who were estranged from each other over the course of the past 10 years. In Creed's Honor which came out yesterday  in stores and online we got Connor's story and in that one Brody and Connor got past their difference and started mending their relationship. The Creed Legacy due out June 28th is Brody's story finally. We got all these hints in the first two books as to what happened in Brody's past. Now he has to confront those painful memories if he wants a relationship with Carolyn. Carolyn has her own demons to deal with from her past if she is ever going to trust anyone again with her heart.

Book Blurb
Rough-and-tumble rodeo cowboy Brody Creed likes life on the move. Until a chance encounter with his long-estranged twin brother brings him “home,” for the first time in years. Suddenly Brody is in Creed territory—a rootless bad boy among family with deep ties to the land and each other. He’s half-ready to bolt when he meets a copper-haired beauty more restless than he is.

Carolyn Simmons is living a temporary life in Lonesome Bend, waiting to light out for the glamour of a metropolis. Then she falls for gorgeous Brody Creed, the opposite of everything she wants. But taming his wild heart might just become everything they both need…

The blurb is a little deceiving i think. Brody is back and building a house and barn on what used to be Tricia McCall's land. He swears he's there to stay now. Carolyn has been house sitting in and around Lonesome Bend for a long time and years ago she and Brody has a bit of a fling for a week or so when suddenly he disappeared only leaving a lame note and drunken phone call later. She had trusted Brody and trusting was not something she's ever done easily and he broke her heart. Brody has a secret though and that's why he ran because he felt he had to. They both have to find a way to let go of all those bad memories and be truthful with each other if they want to be together, There is a serious side to this book but plenty of hot and funny moments  mixed in to balance it all out. The few things that annoyed me some was the talk of the skirt Carolyn was making. It was described several times but i kept getting a gaudy picture in my mind. Brody's reaction to it was funny cause no man would pay that much attention to a skirt. Talk of the skirt was overdone. After reading the latest three books in this series Brody is my favorite of the three. Kind of thought he was a jerk in the first one but i bet that was the intent in that one. lol  To read more about this book and Linda Lael Miller other books please visit her website by clicking www.lindalaelmiller.com. I give The Creed Lagacy by author Linda Lael Miller 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars. If i hadn't started it late at night this would've been on of those read in one sitting book for me.
