Book review Bitten By Deceit Hadley Werewolves #1 by Shawntelle Madison (novella)

 photo 17184947_zpse66de150.jpg

Available now
Alpha wolf Emma Parker is loyal to a fault, even if it means losing the love of her life when he’s ousted from the pack. She’s never stopped needing him, and when a black witch curses the pack, she wonders if she’ll even survive. It’s a poison of the blood, and with each bite, the virus spreads, leaving the infected rabid and under the control of an evil Alpha.

Kyle Benton is starting over. He’s a lone wolf, betrayed by the only woman he’s ever loved. Until Emma barges back into his life, as gorgeous and determined as ever. He’s hell bent on resisting her, or at least making her suffer. But she needs him in a way that touches him to his very soul. Now he has to determine how to set her free, and if he can, how he can ever let her go.

This is a very short 61 page novella. It's hard to pack a lot into so few pages. Emma is in trouble. Something bad is going on in her pack and the alpha Liam is biting people and they are getting sick. He's got a black witch with him and she's the one that's helping him give everyone he bites a terrible illness. Once it gets in the blood he controls them. When Emma gets bitten she leaves town to find to find Kyle the man she loved but let go a year ago. Kyle lost a fight with Liam after Liam and his friends fought dirty the night before and busted up his knee so he couldn't win their fight. He had everything and lost it in one night. Now Emma has found him and although he resists at first he can't turn her away. Liam follow Emma to the town Kyle is in and a fight ensues. Can Kyle defeat Liam and get the love of his life back as well as his pack as their alpha? That's the question in this novella. While there is plenty of action i wish it had been a bit longer with more details of a relationship between Kyle and Emma. It has the potential to really be great. Still a good read for someone who wants just a good evening of reading.  3 out of 5 stars for Bitten by Deceit by Shawntelle Madison.

Book review: Bitter Disenchantment (Coveted 0.4) by Shawntelle Madison

 photo 17229699_zpsa4ef9ffb.jpg

Available now

Werewolf Natalya Stravinsky's outspoken sidekick, Aggie McClure, is featured in this prequel novella. Before Agatha set foot in South Toms River, New Jersey, she had the fight of her life to face. Destined to be the alpha female over her Manhattan pack, Aggie was fully prepared to take on her role until her father arranges a marriage without her consent. She wants out–but the only way is with money–something her new controlling husband won't give her to escape. But such odds never kept a wolf like Aggie down. To sever the twisted tie, she finds herself pitted against raging wood nymphs and backstabbing brownies in an underground supernatural fighting ring. With every victory, the sweet taste of freedom is closer, but her husband isn't willing to let her go that easily. Until the very end, Aggie must fight for the one thing she's never had: a choice

This is a prequel novella to Shawntelle Madison's Coveted series. As it says in the blurb this is Natalya Stravinky's friend Aggie. Aggie is a bad ass and in this novella she's got to be tough because her controlling father is set to marry her off. She resists at first then gives in when she thinks there might be a chance it's a love match. For a while everything feels good. She might actually have found the right man but then it all comes crashing down when he reveals his actual plans. Aggie is pretty much locked out of everything in life she cares about and set to be a trophy wife. Not going to happen. Aggie has to find a way to get out of this mess and she finds a friend or two to lead her in the right direction. It took me a while to get into this but by the end i was hooked and we at the end are left hanging a little as we have to wonder what's up for Aggie next. 3 out of 5 stars for Bitter Disenchantment by Shawntelle Madison.

Book review: Grave Secret (Secret McQueen #5) by Sierra Dean

 photo grave_zps8f19d79e.jpg
Available today!
Sometimes a secret goes to the grave. Sometimes Secret puts you there.

It’s been a hell of a year for Secret McQueen, and the last thing in the world she wants is to get caught up in werewolf drama. But when her former fiancĂ© Lucas Rain shows up asking for her help, she knows there’s no easy way out.

After making it known she wants nothing to do with him, Secret agrees to help find Lucas’s wayward sister Kellen. After all, how much trouble could one socialite get into in the city that never sleeps?

Unless that socialite has been spirited away by fairies.

Trying to track down a missing girl in an alternate reality is just the start of Secret’s problems, though. Someone appears to be killing teenagers, and the MO looks eerily similar to something for which the half-fairy oracle, Calliope, might be responsible. Throw in a rogue wolf pack claiming allegiance to Secret’s mother, Mercy, and she’ll have miles to go before she rests.

Warning: This book contains a promise fulfilled, sex that’s out of this world, and more heartache than one hybrid assassin can handle

Book 5 in the Secret McQueen series  picks up  with more drama for poor Secret. Kellen Lucas sister and Secret's friend is missing. She promises to find her. Mercy Secret's mom is back and trying to kill her again. There's a possibility that Calliope is killing teenagers and Keaty wants her to find out.  There's more than that but i don't want to give anything away because part of the big draw for me when reading is the fact that you can't figure out what's coming. Least i can't. lol  Big stuff happens in this book. I still can't decide if i am team Holden or Team Desmond. You get plenty of both in this book to screw up your head deciding. There are also a few twists i didn't see coming and am not sure i am happy with at all. This book for me made me laugh and feel for the characters. Lucas is still a ass but hopefully he can learn something soon and redeem himself  a bit. I did like him in the beginning when he seemed smart and strong but i am thinking he's pretty lost right now. Sierra Dean is a master at torturing her characters.  It's a thrill ride all the way through and leaves you as always, wanting more. 5 out of 5 stars for Grave Secret by Sierra Dean.

Book review: Kept (Coveted #2) by Shawntelle Madison

Photobucket

Fresh from defending her pack in battle, Natalya Stravinsky, a whip-smart werewolf with a lovable neurotic streak, wants a little rest and relaxation. Once an outcast, she’s now eager to rejoin the ranks of her New Jersey pack, and has even gotten a handle on her obsessive urge to hoard holiday ornaments. Yet Nat barely has time to revel in her progress before the next crisis comes howling at her door.

Nat’s father has suddenly gone missing, captured by the Russian werewolf mafia. And as Nat steps up to save her dad from a mob boss’s deadly game, two men step in to play another round for her heart: her gorgeous alpha ex-boyfriend, Thorn, and her new flame, the sweetly sensitive wizard Nick. With her life growing more harried by the minute, Nat must stay cool, calm, and collected . . . or else risk losing everything.

This is book 2 in the Coveted series by Shawntelle Madison. I have not read book 1 but i have it and am reading in reverse it seems. I think you can read this on it's own but it would be better with having read book 1 first to catch some of the back story to this book. That being said i really enjoyed this book. It's my first book by the author and i was pleasantly surprised how much i liked it.  There are werewolves, Wizards, mermaids, muse's and a whole bunch of interesting characters.  Natalya ( love the name) is a interesting character. She's got a support group full of friends who help her with her quirks. Nick being a one of them is a wizard and a love interest of hers as well as her ex boyfriend Thorn. Loved both these buys but i really felt for Nick. Natalya still loves Thorn but can't have him as he's supposed to marry another wolf in a arranged marriage for the pack as he is become their alpha male or leader. While Natalya is dealing with her quirks and her feelings she has to also go after her father when he is kidnapped and then face the trials in order to become officially a member of the pack.  Shawntelle Madison brings all these characters to life for me and you can get a pretty vivid picture in your mind of the story as it unfolds. I tried sitting up to read this in one sitting but couldn't quite make it. If i could i would have. Those are the best kinds of books i find. I would encourage you to try this series out. It's got a bit of everything and it all comes together to pull you through the story. 5 out of 5 stars for Kept by  Shawntell Madison.

Book review: Deep Dark Secret ( Secret McQueen series book 3) by Sierra Dean

Photobucket

Deep Dark Secret

Secret McQueen, Book 3
Coming March 6, 2012
The only good Secret is a buried Secret.

Secret McQueen has hunted vampires, werewolves, and every conceivable supernatural menace-to-society. Seen it all? Not even close. When the queen of the were-ocelots comes to her for help finding a missing girl, the half-vampire/half-werewolf soon realizes how much she has to learn about the things that go bump in the night.

The case of the missing cat is one thing. Pile it up with her new duties as a Tribunal Leader, her tenuous position as mate to the king of the Eastern werewolves, and a slew of new (and unwelcome) supernatural abilities, and Secret is once again in familiar territory. Way over her head. But for this multitasking half-breed, it’s business as unusual.

What knocks her for a loop, though, isn’t her lover’s intoxicating kiss. It’s the missing memories rushing at her from out of nowhere, signaling a rapidly approaching fork in her destiny. Her choice will affect not only her life, but her love.

Warning: Contains a werewolf king with wandering hands, a creepy English professor with nefarious plans, and one hell of an unexpected gala evening at Columbia.

This is the 3rd book in the Secret McQueen series but there are also 2 novella that go with this series. I've read then all and everyone has sucked me right in. There is something about these books that grabs a hold of me bythe  first chapter and doesn't  let me go to the end and i swear the end always sneaks up and hits me smack in the forehead. lol  It's like what? what? That's the end? There needs to be more. There is so much going on in these books. It's not really confusing as much as action packed. Secret is juggling at least 3 men although I believe Sig, her vampire boss likes her too. All of them know about the others but it's not her biggest problem considering all the other more nastier more threatening things orbiting her universe. This book is filled with plenty of action and plenty of super hot men. Secret McQueen is probably the most bad ass chick in books. The books give you a nice chunk of her story then cuts you off and makes you wait for more. It's thrilling and frustrating at the same time. I spend the time reading and wondering what's coming next because there is no way in hell i can guess.  I'm amazed with the writing and the story pulls me through at break neck speed to the end. Just wow. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Deep Dark Secret by Sierra Dean

Some secrets are dangerous. This Secret is deadly.

Secret McQueen, Book 1

For Secret McQueen, her life feels like the punch line for a terrible joke. Abandoned at birth by her werewolf mother, hired as a teen by the vampire council of New York City to kill rogues, Secret is a part of both worlds, but belongs to neither. At twenty-two, she has carved out as close to a normal life as a bounty hunter can.

When an enemy from her past returns with her death on his mind, she is forced to call on every ounce of her mixed heritage to save herself—and everyone else in the city she calls home. As if the fate of the world wasn’t enough to deal with, there’s Lucas Rain, King of the East Coast werewolves, who seems to believe he and Secret are fated to be together. Too bad Secret also feels a connection with Desmond, Lucas’s second-in-command…

Warning: This book contains a sarcastic, kick-ass bounty hunter; a metaphysical love triangle with two sexy werewolves; a demanding vampire council; and a spicy seasoning of sex and violence.

Secret Santa A Secret Queen novella by author Sierra Dean

Photobucket

Secret Santa

A Secret McQueen Novella
Sierra Dean
Available today  November 29, 2011
ebook only

’Tis the season for ho-ho-homicide.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The season for mistletoe, Christmas lights…and a killing spree. When Secret’s friend, Detective Mercedes Castilla, asks for help to solve a series of murders longer than a string of lights, Secret resigns herself to the fact her holidays will be anything but peaceful.

It seems someone is killing New Yorkers in an unusually gruesome way, and as the bodies pile up faster than presents under the tree, the police are no closer to finding the killer than Secret is to finding the perfect present for one of her boyfriends, Lucas.

Tracking down a monster in Manhattan the week before Christmas is almost as difficult as shopping for her ever-expanding collection of loved ones. When tragedy strikes close to home, Secret must do everything in her power to put an end to the horror in time for Santa to come down the chimney.

Warning: Contains a less than merry McQueen with a sword and a reason to use it; a festive new use for mistletoe; and a promise that will haunt Secret like the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Sigh i love this series. I think Sierra Dean tries to torture me with these novella's lol. I love em but they are never long enough. She gives you some great story then leaves you hanging. If you've read this series then you know all about Secret McQueen hunter extraordinaire. Secret has a complicated life. She is soul bonded to the wolf King of New York  Lucas Rain and his second in command Desmond. Then there is her super sexy vampire friend and Vampire council Sentry Holden Chancery who has the hots for her. Talk about a confusing love life. In Secret Santa you don't get to see Lucas at all as he is away visiting family. You do get a nice dose of Desmond and Holden though.  I can totally see the confusion Secret has for all these men. Secret Santa is a sexy little Christmas read with a twist. A monster is on the loose in New York City. Bodies keep showing up or at least parts of them and Secret is asked to try and figure out what's going on. It gets close to home when someone close gets snatched. Will Secret save the day and get to enjoy Christmas with her newly made up family? Another exciting Secret read that of course leaves you waiting for more. The only thing missing was Lucas Rain but you can't have everything in a short novella. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Secret Santa by Sierra Dean. Book review: A Bloody Good Secret by author Sierra Dean

I've been really lucky this year with new authors. Sierra Dean is one of these spanking brand new authors and i think she is one to watch. I have read her debut book "A Secret This Way Comes" her novella "The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters" and the second full book in this series " A Bloody Good Secret". When i read the first one i thought what the heck is up with this title? Once you get past the first chapter you have a ah haa moment and it's all very clear. The lead character's name is " Secret McQueen". I think it's pretty clever how she has set up the titles to the books so far. I've read that the next full book in this series is due out possibly spring 2012 and is titled "Deep Dark Secret". Sounds good huh?  While we're waiting in November will be another novella "Secret Santa". How about we get to a blurb for this book for now.

THIS BLURB CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR SOMETHING SECRET THIS WAY COMES

You can’t keep a good Secret for long.

After cheating death twice in one night, confessing her true nature to her werewolf soul mates and being asked to kill one of her closest friends, Secret took a much-needed vacation. By running away.

Now she’s back in town—dragged kicking and screaming—determined to clear Holden Chancery’s name. Right after she finds out what he’s accused of. It shouldn’t be hard— Holden has a habit of using their new and scintillating psychic bond to break into her thoughts and dreams at some very, shall we say, awkward moments.

Just a few things stand in her way: a secretive Tribunal leader, a group of would- be vampire slayers and two werewolf boyfriends who refuse to let her operate in her customary lone-wolf style. Even less amusing are the terrifying creatures that someone is using in an attempt to gain control of the council. Even for this out-of-the-ordinary bounty hunter, it’s a challenge with potentially deadly teeth.

Warning: Contains an ever-plucky heroine with no shortage of weapons, super-hot mind games, an ever-complicated love triangle and one hell of a creepy amusement park.

I'm sure you can guess that i loved it!! Excellent writing. Very witty and it just kept me right there in the book. The characters are all for the most part very likable and well the Men seem to all be pretty darn hot. Secret seems to attract all of them too. She already has 2 werewolf soul mates but then she suddenly starts dreaming about have sex with Holden. What??? lol Then she is also in bed with her vampire boss Sig at one point in this book. What i am saying is you can't get bored reading this book. It moves along at a nice steady pace and there is something happening all the time. I felt like i was on this fast moving train and you don't want to get to your destination cause you're having to much fun. Like the previous book and novella there was what the heck that's the end already moment.  Not that is was a bad ending but you were so into it you are ticked there isn't more. Sierra also has the punch you in the face cliff hanger ending down pat. Going to have to learn patience for waiting for the next book reading this series. Luckily you won't have to wait long because there is another novella coming out in November called "Secret Santa".Christmas and Secret McQueen what could happen? lol A lot! Seriously if you are into paranormal romance this is a great series. If you have not tried it yet this is the perfect author to start with.  It might seem really bloody and gory going by the titles but it's not really about that.  All i can say is I'm ready and waiting for the next book. I give "A Bloody Good Secret" by author Sierra Dean 5 out of 5 Modokker book pick stars! Fabulous reading. Paranormal at it's best. Read more about the series by going to Sierra Dean's website. Blurbs and excerpts included!! www.sierradean.com

Since she has a blurb on her site for Secret Santa here it is too.

Book review: The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters by author Sierra Dean

The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters is a short little novella by author Sierra Dean. Her other book "Something Secret This way Comes" was reviewed on the blog a while back and you can find that review here. Let me give you the blurb.

The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters

A Secret McQueen Novella
Coming July 19, 2011

Are blind dates supposed to be this bloody?

They say it’s impossible to find a man in New York City. Secret McQueen needs to find two in one night. Of course, it’ll mean pulling off the impossible—find and kill a displaced rogue vampire without disrupting the first promising date she’s had in ages. As a werewolf hybrid used to walking a fine line of survival in the vampire world, though, Secret eats impossible for breakfast.

Somewhere between hello and the first round of drinks, Secret makes her move. Her target, Hollywood’s biggest star, shouldn't be hard to spot. Just look for swarms of fans. Except every time her vampire liaison, Holden, helps keep her mission on track, her date runs further off the rails.

Either Holden has a hidden agenda, or he knows more than he’s letting on about her quarry. One way or another, Secret is determined to get her man, and meet Mr. Right. Or die trying.

Warning: This book contains a sword-wielding assassin whose barbs are sharper than her blade, a vampire with serious brooding issues but a skilled tongue, and an A-lister with a bad habit of eating his fans.

Oh man this novella was to short for me. I was really enjoying it and then it was over. Definitely makes you want more. If you have not read the first Secret McQueen book. No worries you can read this one first as a stand alone. This novella takes place about a year before the events in "Something Secret This way Comes". There is a whole lot of action, hot men and hunting the bad guy in this book. Definitely a must read. To read more about this book, and Sierra Dean please check out her website by clicking here www.sierradean.com . There is a excerpt there for both book as well. I give The Secret Guide for Dating Monsters 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars. I'm ready for more Secret!

Book Review: Something Secret this Way Comes by author Sierra Dean

I was lucky enough to receive a advanced readers copy of Something Secret this way Comes. I didn't realize until after i finished reading it that this is a debut book for this author. I wasn't to sure about the title when i first read it but then i started into it and realized the play of words on the heroine's name. Let me give you a little blurb for this book first.

Something Secret This Way Comes

Secret McQueen, Book 1
May 10, 2011
Some secrets are dangerous. This Secret is deadly.

As if the fate of the world wasn't enough to deal with, there’s Lucas Rain, King of the East coast werewolves, who seems to believe he and Secret are fated to be together.

OK OK where to start. It's kind of fun reading a authors book where you have no knowledge of prior works. In this case this is her first book. I think she knocked it out of the park. Just gonna say it. I started reading this a couple weeks ago while sitting under the hair dryer at my local salon. I only got a few chapters in but i liked what i read but i also wondered if this was going to full of violence with little romance.  I set it aside for a bit then because other things came up and picked it back up a few days ago and devoured it! If you've read Nalini Singh's Angel's Blood it put me in mind of that but different at the same time. Both her main characters are vampire hunters but the stories are different. I just got that same feeling reading this as i did reading Angel's Blood. Loved that too btw.

Secret McQueen was an abomination to both werewolves and vampires. Good thing only a handful of people know she is a half breed. Half vampire half werewolf. Secret is also a hunter. She hunts vampires mostly but has hunted a werewolf or two and maybe a human with her partner Keaty. There is so much in this book and yet so much more to come. I liked all the characters even the evil bad ones. lol There is nothing predictable in this book. I don't mind some predictability but without it you are more on edge. There is some violence and gore in this book so be warned it's in there but it doesn't overshadow the story. The more the book went on the more i got into and got excited. There is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end that makes your mouth hang open and say WOW! I did literally. I was glad there is more to come and mad i have to wait for it. Secret is one kick ass women who lives her life learning to take care of herself and not depend on other people. A enemy of her past comes back seemingly to kill her. In the mist of figuring out what going on with that she runs into the werewolf kind of the Eastern States Lucas Rain. Instant attraction hits and she doesn't know what to think of it. Then she seems to have that same attraction for Lucas's 2nd in command Desmond. What's a girl to do? Neither know the dirty secret of her heritage though. If they find out then what? About 3/4 of the way thru i was wondering how she was going to wrap it all up and finally decided that she wasn't. That means another book is going to be coming out reportedly in September so I'll be waiting. You can read more about Sierra Dean and read a excerpt of this book on her website by clicking here. BTW her cover is awesome. I'd love to see this as a paperback. Right now it's only going to be available as a ebook. Something Secret This Way Comes releases May 10. I have to give it 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. I've read some really good books lately. This one was such a great surprise for me.
