Sigh I love this book. Just finished re-reading it for the probably 50th time??? yeah....

How many of you re-read your favorite books? Do you have keepers that you love so much you can't bear to let them go? I do. To be honest i have at least 7 boxes of various sizes filled with books by authors i can't bear to let go. I'll borrow them to friends to spread my love for these books and authors but I make sure they come back. In between new releases i re-read these. If i need a comfort read i go to one of these boxes and pick whatever strikes my fancy. I keep a handful of these by my night stand for when i can't sleep. Julie Garwood and Nora Roberts were the first two authors that made my keepers list. I bought a few Nora Roberts books at my local libraries used book sale several years ago. I had not read since high school due to work, stint in the Army and having small children. It was actually the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers and all the talk about it that got me to try reading again. After reading that series i was kind of stuck not knowing what to read because i didn't know any authors. Luckily a friend dragged me to the used book sale where i picked up Miss Nora. I had Nora Roberts then so i read and read and read and finally decided a couple months later i should try someone else too. Who though? My friend was reading a Julie Garwood book and I looked it over ( she was reading it and wouldn't let me have it right then lol). I went to the library to see what else they had by her. I checked out Murder List and was very hooked on Julie in no time. This is where my love for the Scottish highlanders came from. I had a copy of Shadow Music from somewhere and i kept thinking I don't want to read some old historical. It's probably really stuff and boring. One day I decided to at least read the first chapter. If i didn't like it i would give it away or donate it. HA!! I think i read that book in one sitting and stayed up half the night. I think most if not all Julie Garwood's back-list is now in ebook form for those of you with ereaders who love Julie Garwood like i do or who would like to give her a go. She only writes one book a year and i wait patiently although sometimes not so patiently for it to come out. This year we're waiting for August to come around.

This is my long standing list. Authors I've been collecting so to speak since i started reading again several years ago. I have discovered many more since then.  I confess i can add to it right now but it would get really long. Many have been around for a while that i just didn't have the opportunity to read ( to many authors not enough time in the day). In the past year though I have discovered more and more debut authors. Brand spanking newly published authors. Please be sure to give these authors a try as well as the more established authors. There are really good books by some really great authors everywhere. Best place to start finding these fine people is on Facebook and twitter but i think a even better place in through reading blogs. All kinds of blogs. Even authors have blogs where they talk about not only their own work but work of fellow authors. The romance community is kind of a family and most everyone is really nice and helpful. Most authors are down to earth real people just like everyone else out there. My blog has links to several blogs to the left side of this post. I encourage you to start there and see where it leads you. Almost every blog has a blog list like mine so you can keep finding new authors and books and reviews that way.

Book review: Spirit Bound( Book #2 Sisters of the Heart) by Christine Feehan

I am what you might consider a pretty big fan of Christine Feehan. I've read every one of her books many more than once. This new series Sisters of the Heart is good but I'm struggling with the love i felt for the Drake sisters series. I'm not quite there in feeling for this new series what i felt for the Drakes. I love that the new series is set in Sea Haven and that the Drakes are somewhat included but not enough for me at this point. Book number two Spirit Bound is was really good once i got about halfway through it finally picked up and i was really getting into it but this time the story was to wordy. To much thinking in their heads and they are in love right away or obsessed but then you spend half the book with them talking about in their heads. When you get to the action, it's really good. I love Lev and Stefan's interactions and the giving of more details into their history. The kaleidoscopes that Judith makes are really cool and interesting especially when Stefan makes one. I liked them together but i wanted more. Slightly disappointed in the ending of the problem with Judith's stalker guy. I kept thinking that's it? Where is Stefan. I don't want to say i didn't like it because i really did enjoy it. It just wasn't up to snuff for what i was expecting. If you are paying attention you get some interesting glances into Blythe. I have some theories i would love to talk to someone about but i hate to throw out thoughts and possibly ruin something for someone. lol Just pay attention to her parts of this book particularly at the very end and her hands and think of the Prakenskii brothers. There that's a hint at least. 3 and 1/2 stars for Spirit Bound. I so wish i could say 5 stars but i just can't. Hoping the next book is better.

Dual Book review: Dark Predator (Book 22 Dark Series) by author Christine Feehan

Sarah and i are both going to offer up our review of this book. Fair warning we're both fans of Christine Feehan. Sometimes that's a hard thing though. I wonder if i my expectation will be met. Let's see how we did.

Sarah's Review: First, I need to admit I am a Christine Feehan fan. I really love her Dark Series, the Ghostwalker Series, and her Leopard Series (oddly enough, I'm not so fond of her Sea Haven Series - go figure.). That being said, they are all essentially the same. The woman has a format and believes in sticking to it. For example:
Incredibly hot, aggressive, alpha male - check.
Beautiful, young, virgin/almost-virgin psychic female - check.
Hero and heroine have a psychic-type link creating an intense bond and really HOT sex - check.
Bad guys (vampires, megalomaniacal billionaires, evil, rotten humans) - check.
Fast paced action with lots of nature/wildlife background and awesome battles and weapons- check.


But her characters, and the entire worlds she creates, are so vivid and well-described that I feel like I'm in the rain forest, or a deep cave, or the ocean. I feel connected to her heroines, and care about the heroes. So reading one of her books is both entertaining and very familiar.


I was really excited to read about Zacarias De La Cruz, one of the oldest and darkest of the Carpathians hunters. The identity of his lifemate was a much debated question on the internet prior to the book release, and I certainly never guessed who it would be - well done, Ms. Feehan!

At its heart, Dark Predator is truly the intimate story of Zacarias and his lifemate, how they come together, fall in love/lust, and begin their relationship. Most of the other Dark books have sub-plots involving the battles of Carpathians against the vampires and some mages who are trying to destroy the Carpathian species. But Zacarias is unlike most other hunters, and the discovery of his lifemate as he is trying to die honorably shocks him. He quickly realizes that he is not like other Carpathians, and his relationship with his lifemate will not be the same as others of his species. I really appreciated how the author handled the fact that Zacarias is about a thousand years old, has avoided almost all human and Carpathian contact for centuries, and has spent the last half-millennia in South America. So the guy has zero people skills and thinks of women as objects. His attempts to "rule" his lifemate, while probably realistic, became pretty repetitive ("I will rule you" is a frequent quote). I found myself missing the steady action of most of her previous books. Feehan's writing often veers off the path of paranormal romance and skips along the edge of straight-up erotica, and I would argue that is the case here, with dominant/submissive themes in play here. All in all, a solid entry in the series.

As with her other Dark Series books, this can easily be a stand-alone read, although reading the series in order is helpful for understanding the complex and layered history and relationships.

Wow you know. Sarah's right there seems to be a bit of a formula to this series but it's never bothered me.  I've read every book Christine Feehan has written as far as i know. I'm not sure what she has but i like it. lol I've been waiting for a long time for Zacarias story. I wondered how it would go and was excited to think it was going to be really good. Zacarias is about as close to the end as they come. He's been that way for a long time. He finally sees his brothers all settled with their lifemates and he's helped protect his race from terrible things and now is ready to let it all go and be done. He feels this intense need to go to his Peruvian ranch home so that's where he goes. You feel this anticipation as he gets there to who his lifemate might be and when he'll meet her. HA!! He meets her right away but things did not go as i thought they would. Marguarita who appeared in one of the other dark series books turns out to be his lifemate or is she?? Your kind of left guessing for a while because Zacarias does not exhibit all the usual signs that a carpathian usually does when they meet their lifemate. For me this book was a bit different in that Zacarias is kind of mean and it's explained that he was so close to turning and he had turned off his emotions for so long that he couldn't connect like he should. Didn't understand modern times. OK but still he was to mean for me. Kind of a let down for me there. Marguarita was one understanding women because not only does she get tossed around by Zacarias but by a couple of baddies as well. I felt bad for her. There were a lot of emotional moments. I kept waiting for it to click with Zacarias and i thought he'd never get there. This was not a easy love story but still in the end a good one. Christine Feehan really knows how to hit the details and bring wonder to her stories. The  only thing that was missing at the end for me was Zacarias taking Marguarita to meet his brothers and lifemates. That would've made my day.  4 out of 5 Modokker Books picks for Dark Predator by Christine Feehan. This one is not as romantic as the rest and the love story is one that was hard fought for by the heroine. Margauarita was really Zacarias saving grace.

Joint Book review: Savage nature by author Christine Feehan

Trying something new here on the blog. My new reviewer and friend Sarah and i both recently read this book so we're both going to tell you what we think. Savage Nature is book 5 in Christine Feehan's Leopard series. There are not to many in this series that you can't read them all and catch up. Let's start with the blurb.

If you've been reading this series like i have then you've met Drake several times before. He's a hell of a guy whose has been through hell. I was so excited to see him get his own book finally. We get some characters from previous books which is always great and finally Drake gets to shift again. I love when Christine Feehan sets her book in the bayou. It's so far removed from my life in northern part of the US and i enjoy the banter  of the characters with the great bayou accents if that the right term for it. Drake is a major alpha dog folks but he's got a huge heart too and Saria has these 4 awesome brothers who didn't take care of her like they should have while growing up and she feels disconnected from them. She has to learn to trust them. There are murders in the bayou though and Saria gets attacked by a shifter and it's getting dangerous so she calls in help and she gets Drake! I loved this one. Lots of action, hot guys and suspense. I didn't find it obvious who the bad guy was in this one. I only suspected about 3/4 of the way through and it was a toss up between two people until almost the end. I give Savage nature by Christine Feehan 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars. Can't wait for the next one.

Savage Nature (Leopard Series #5) by Christine Feehan

Savage Nature is one of those rare books that has it all - a hot paranormal romance mixed with a very good murder mystery, set in the steamy swamps of Louisiana. Add an inbred shapeshifting lair, a leadership power struggle, and botanical testosterone growing wild and you have all the makings of a great escape read.

Saria Boudreaux is a great heroine - smart, capable and able to hold her own. She's basically raised herself since childhood, and knows the swamp better than anyone else. But lately she has sensed that she is being watched, and her much older brothers, all recently returned home, have been acting strange as well. Adding to Saria's problems, she's been finding dead bodies in her beloved swamp, and she's afraid one of her brothers may be the murderer. The victims have been killed by a large cat, and while Saria is clueless about her own shifter status, she knows that her brothers are leopard shifters. Unable to confide in them, she contacts the powerful man who owns the land they live on (don't think about that decision too much, because it's how Drake ends up in Saria's swamp), and is viciously attacked by a leopard.

Drake soon arrives, sent by the landowner to investigate Saria's claim. Pretty soon all hell is breaking loose as Drake and Saria feel an intense sexual attraction, the locals let Drake know he's not welcome through deadly leopard fights and gunshots, a drug-running operation is discovered, and Saria goes into heat. Drake Donovan is a deliciously animalistic alpha male who happens to be kind and considerate. He is also strong, smart, experienced and confident, and when he first meets Saria Boudreaux in the Louisiana swamps, he realizes she's not only a fellow shifter, but also his mate. The trouble is, Saria doesn't realize she's a leopard shifter. Or that she is about to go into heat as her leopard prepares to emerge for the first time. So Drake has to initiate her into the worlds of both leopard shifters and lovemaking - thankfully he is very, very good at both.

The mysteries of the deaths, the drugs, and the history of this Louisiana leopard lair are uncovered as Drake and Saria investigate. Their lives are in constant danger as they come closer to learning the truth, and their intense attraction creates explosive passion. The action and the sexual tension are relentless, making the book impossible to put down. This paranormal romance is classic Feehan, and will not disappoint! I give Savage nature 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars.

Book review: Water Bound by author Christine Feehan

Water Bound is a the latest release for Christine Feehan. This is book one i believe will be a series of 6 since there are 6 sisters. The series takes place is Sea Haven. If you follow Christine Feehan you might know that the Drake Sisters series took place there too so you will get to see more of the characters from that series in this new series.  I can't tell you how excited i was to hear that! Let's get start with a little piece from the back of Water Bound.

Oh my gosh so if you followed the Drake sisters series you should remember Lev Prakenskii from Hidden Currents. This book kind of picks up from what happens to him at the end of that book. You get to see some of the characters from that series of course too. Since all the sisters for married at the end of Hidden Currents except Hannah cause her and Jonas already are married and she is expecting you do get to see them some. Jonas is the sheriff so of course he's there is there is trouble. The one amazing thing in this book is Rikki is autistic. High functioning but with sensory problems and she has to deal with her life in a different way than most people. Plus she's had this tragic past to deal with and then comes along Lev. Ah Lev. You think you don't like him to much in Hidden Currents but your not sure because he's kind of kept mysterious. In this book you just end up loving him. You really need to give this book a whirl. It's so well written and you get to see Rikki as a real person who is strong and capable of doing pretty much anything she thinks she needs to. Definitely a good start to Christine Feehan's new series which is called Sisters of the Heart. Six sisters bound by their hearts not blood. No surprise i give Water Bound 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars. TBR or in other words the To be read pile

TBR, do you have one? Most people who read do. I had a decent size one about 100 books but in the last few months it's taken on a bigger size of about 200 to 250. I haven't counted. Not sure if I'll read all of them or trade some. Most were free or almost free. I have a great library i use that sells their used largely donated books very cheap. About twice a year they have a book sale and then they are even cheaper and what's left is free. Can't beat free. I always pick up a bag full of smaller Harlequin books for my mother in law although i enjoy them myself too. Lately I've been working on my TBR pile and well also trying to finish up finding and reading one of my favorite authors.  If you know me i have a list of authors that i adore. That list occasionally grows when i find someone else i can't get enough of. Once they're on my list i try to read everything they've written. Not so easy with some authors like Nora Roberts who have written so many books. Let's see if i were to make a written list of favorites they'd have to include:

If they write a book i'm going to read it. I finally read every book that Christine Feehan has written and i am working on Julie Garwood not counting books she's written as Emily Chase. Getting all Nora Roberts books written might very well take me years there are so many. I've been working my way thru Susan Mallery and Linda Lael Miller.  If you have noticed some of these authors write quite different genre's but i like that because i like to mix it up some. You can only read so much paranormal no matter how good it is until you need a little basic romance.

My TBR (to be read) pile contains quite a few Nora Roberts books. Like i said I'll be reading her forever trying to catch up. I read her new ones when they come out though. I really like the Bride Quartet series she is working on now. Besides Nora though I have a pile of Susan Wiggs, Linda Howard who is working her way on to my favorite list. LOVED Mr Perfect! Let's see we also have Christy Reece who is a newer authors with some awesome series out there and Victoria Dahl who is almost on my fav list. Her new release Lead me on should be awesome if i can every find it in the store to buy it. How about Jane Porter. wonderful writer and person.  I have tons more authors and books that's just who comes to mind. Who is on your TBR pile. How about a wish list? Have one of those?
