Book review: Three Little Words (Fool's Gold #12) by Susan Mallery

 photo 15822196_zps05ae95b6.jpg

Available July 30th 2013
Can first love turn into the real deal in a sizzling new Fool's Gold story from New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery? Isabel Carlisle thinks she's cursed in the romance department. Her teenage crush, Ford Hendrix, ignored all her letters. Her husband left her for another...man. So Isabel has come home to dust off her passion for fashion and run the family bridal shop until her parents are ready to sell it. Then she'll pursue her real dreams. At least, that's the plan, until sexy, charming Ford returns and leaves her feeling fourteen all over again....

Seeing Isabel all grown up hits bodyguard trainer Ford like a sucker punch. Back when heartbreak made him join the military, her sweet letters kept him sane. Now he can't take his eyes-or his lips-off her. The man who gave up on love has a reason to stay in Fool's Gold forever-if three little words can convince Isabel to do the same..

This book has a little back story. Isabel is the younger sister of Maeve who Ford was supposed to marry about 14 years ago. Maeve cheated on Ford with is best friend Leonard and broke off the engagement shortly before the wedding. Isabel was in love as much as you can when your only 14 with Ford. She cried and cried when he left town for the military right after this. Fast forward 14 years. Ford's finally out of the military and working with friends at CDS a security business. Isabel is back too. She running her parents bridal business while they are on a world wide vacation. When they return she's supposed to help them sell the Bridal salon and then move back to New York to start a fashion business with a friend. Ford says he isn't marriage material. That something must be wrong for him in in 14 years he's never had a serious relationship since Maeve. Even now though he realizes he never really loved her then.  Isabel is nervous about seeing Ford and talking to him. Ever since he left she's written him letters.  He never wrote back. She doesn't want to him to think she's a stalker. Ford for his part read every one. Over and over again. They helped him get through some pretty rough spots in his military career when he needed a dose of good and normal.  Ford big problem now is his mother. She wants him and his divorced brother Kent married and will do almost anything to make it happen.  When ford moves into the garage apartment of Isabel's' parents home he asks Isabel to be his pretend girlfriend to get his mother off his back.  Things get crazy from there. There is a double romance going on here. Ford and Isabel think they are faking it until Isabel figures out she's in love and her plans have changed. Then you have Ford's older brother Kent who has been around in the series for a little while now. He's divorced with a son. He falls for Consuelo Ford's friend and fellow coworker/owner of CDS. Their story is a little smaller but packs a big punch too. Kent is figuring his way into dating again and Consuelo has no idea how to date with her background and history. Lots of internal conflicts of course in this book but like all HEA they get worked out by the last page. Ford was a little to full of himself for my taste and i wanted to kick him in the shins a time or two for that.  What i love most about this series is even though each books highlights a new couple you get to see what's going on with previous couples and possible set up for future couple.  You feel like you could be there. I  have no idea how Susan Mallery keeps track but i am glad she does such an amazing job. 4 out of 5 stars for Three Little Words by Susan Mallery.

Book review: Two of a Kind (Fool's Gold #11) by Susan Mallery

 photo 15822195_zps3e1f093c.jpg

Available now!
New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery welcomes readers back to Fool's Gold, where a one-time fling could become the real thing...

Felicia Swift never dreamed she'd hear a deep, sexy voice from her past in tiny Fool's Gold, California. The last time Gideon Boylan whispered in her ear was half a world away...on the morning after the hottest night of her life. Her freaky smarts have limited her close friendships, and romance, but she came to Fool's Gold looking for ordinary. Gorgeous, brooding Gideon is anything but that.

Black Ops taught Gideon that love could be deadly. Now he pretends to fit in while keeping everyone at arm's length. Felicia wants more than he can give-a home, family, love-but she has a lot to learn about men...and Gideon needs to be the man to teach her.

As these two misfits discover that passion isn't the only thing they have in common, they just might figure out that two of a kind should never be split apart.

The Fools Gold series continues with Two of a Kind the story of Felicia Swift and Gideon Boylan. Gideon we met a while back and Felicia more recently. Both have issues with their past. Felicia is pretty much a genius but was left at the age of 4 by her parents with a college because they couldn't handle her. Raised at the college and taken care of my professors she was smarter than most of them but didn't learn how to socialize for her age and so grew up being a little on the odd side in some ways. She got into the military where she met Ford Hendrix and Justice Garrett.  Justice became like a brother to her as well as Ford. Wanting to be normal she sought out a man and picked Gideon to be her first time. Now years later they are both in Fools Gold and the spark from that one night is still there. Gideon was a soldier taken prisoner of war for 2 years before he was rescued. He was the only one of his men to survive and now has survivors guilt and PTSD among other things. He can't be what Felicia really needs but decides to help her learn to socialize in the normal world. Throw a 13 year old son in the mix he didn't know he had and it's a interesting mix. You get some back story on a lot of the characters in this story. Most of course for Felicia and Gideon but a bunch of the secondary characters as well. Felicia is this brilliant person but is trying to learn how to be like a average young woman. How to be loved and make friends and in a surprise for her how to me a mother. Gideon is good at faking normal although with Felicia he feels more normal than he has in years. I found myself rooting for Gideon to want to try to get to a place he needed to be to heal. Felicia is much stronger a person and much more normal than she thinks. You watch her blossom and grow in this book. Kent and Gideon's sons are hilarious in their quest to get Gideon to figure out he loved Felicia. My heart melted a little bit every time Gideon and Felicia had scenes together. You just want it to work out because they've been through so much in their lives they deserve some happiness. Another brilliant addition to the Fools Gold series. 4 out of 5 stars for Two of a Kind by Susan Mallery. I hope we get to see Gideon's brother in a future book!

Book review: Just One Kiss (Fool's Gold # 11) by Susan Mallery

 photo 15822175_zpsf8775fb4.jpg

Available now!
He won't hesitate to put his life on the line...but will he ever risk his heart?
Falling for Justice Garrett was a high point in Patience McGraw's otherwise awkward adolescence. Even after he disappeared, Patience never forgot the boy who captured her heart. Now, he's back in Fool's Gold, California, and her passion for him is as strong as ever. But how can she trust that he won't abandon her again-and her daughter, too?

When bodyguard Justice Garrett was a young man, witness protection brought him to this idyllic town and he never forgot its warmth, or the sweet beauty of his childhood friend. He's returned to open a defense academy, and the Patience he once knew is all grown up. He can't resist her smile, or her curves. But Justice's past doesn't make him husband, or father, material.

Patience and Justice think they'll succumb to just one kiss... Then one more... Okay, just one night together. But they might learn that falling in love is beyond anyone's control

This is book 11 already in Susan Mallery's Fools Gold series. It's never to late to start this series. I think you can jump in pretty much anywhere and figure your way around.  I kind just want to jump up and down a bit because we are getting so close to knowing more about Ford and Gideon!! They have either made appearances or been mentioned in previous book and the build up is getting to me.  For this book though we get to meet a brand new guy Justice Garrett. Although his real name isn't Justice he picks that name when he needs to have it changed and once you read the book it's really quite fitting for him. Patience McGraw has been seen a bit in previous books but it brought out to the for front for this one. She's a single mom to an adorable little girl but when she was 14 she became good friends with a new boy she thought was 16. Yup Justice Garrret.  After a while she realized she loved him as much as a 14 year old girl can love a boy. Before she can tell him though he disappears without anything sign he was ever there. Justice is in witness protection to save him from his criminal father who is out to kill him. He's also 18 years old not 16 so although he has feeling for Patience he knows he can't act  on them and then he's forced to leave when his father is spotted in the area. Fast forward years later and suddenly Justice is back in town. Justice is the one thing that Justice pulled out in all the years he'd been gone from Fools Gold and in the military. Now he's back to start a new business and to see Patience. They start a romance that's full of doubts. For Patience. Will Justice stick around this time. For Justice is he worthy of love and is it safe. There are a lot of fears to be worked through and then the worst thing happens and the delicate balance is blown apart. I could see the big event that happens toward the end of this book coming.  I knew it was going to happen early on but that's ok because it's not the focus of the story anyway. What i wondered of course was how the characters would handle it and how would the happy ending come about. lol Again Susan Mallery delivers another winner in my eyes. While this romance was really more laid back i enjoyed it. The characters are believable and we get some interesting glimpses into what's coming in the future  with new character introductions and a look at past stories as well as those relationships progress and secondaries.  4 out of 5 stars for Just One Kill by Susan Mallery.

ps if you read the Fools Gold Christmas story there is a lot of Gideon whose story is coming soon and Patience as well.

Book review: Only Us ( Fools Gold Holiday Novella) by Susan Mallery

 photo onlyus_zpseb7a5904.jpg

Fool's Gold, California, a charming small town that's short on men, has captured thousands of readers' hearts in Susan Mallery's New York Times bestselling series. Fall in love with Fool's Gold's beloved characters and heartwarming romance in Only Us: A Fool's Gold Holiday novella!

Pet groomer Carina Fiore wants nothing more than to confess her feelings to the man she loves. She's drawn to veterinarian Cameron McKenzie's good looks, caring nature and especially his devotion to his young daughter. But he's also her boss and a good friend. Putting her heart on the line could cost Rina both her job and their friendship forever.

Since his divorce, Cameron hasn't been willing to trust his heart--or his daughter--with anyone else. For months he's pushed away all thoughts of taking Rina in his arms and kissing her, unwilling to risk their friendship for a single night of pleasure. But when a kiss under the mistletoe unlocks the simmering passion between them, Rina and Cameron may just find love for the holidays after all....

This is a novella that goes along with Susan Mallery's Fools Gold series. I think you could also read it as a stand alone if you wanted too. Carina or Rina as she is called in the book is a pet groomer that works out of Cameron McKenzie's veterinarian office. She also helps take care of his little girl. She falls in love with him but he's kind of oblivious and really just afraid to change anything. His wife left him when his daughter was a just a baby so trusting does not come easy.  Carina's friend Beth convinces her to tell him how she feels and it backfires. Cameron rebuffs her so she plans to move her business out of his clinic and desperately tries to pretend like she's OK as she continues to care for his daughter and get through the holidays until she can get away from him. You can feel the hurt Carina feels as you read this story and the love she feels for both Cameron and his daughter. You can also feel for Cameron because he doesn't want to lose what he already has with Carina but is also afraid to give his heart again. Touching, wonderful short story. Love the ending.  4 out of 5 stars for Only us by Susan Mallery. Wish it would have been a full book but you take the little bits you get and enjoy them.

Book review: All Summer Long ( Foold Gold series book 9) by Susan Mallery

ALL SUMMER LONG (Fool’s Gold #9)

August 2012 ( out July 31st)

Can a summer fling turn into love that lasts a lifetime?

Former underwear model turned entrepreneur Clay Stryker has loved, tragically lost and vowed that he’ll never risk his heart again. After making his fortune, the youngest of the rugged Stryker brothers returns to Fool’s Gold, California, to put down roots on a ranch of his own. But he’s frustrated to discover that even in his hometown, people see him only for his world-famous…assets.

Firefighter Chantal (Charlie) Dixon grew up an ugly duckling beside her delicately beautiful mother, a feeling reinforced long ago by a man who left soul-deep scars. Now she has good friends, a solid job and the itch to start a family—yet she can’t move toward the future while she’s haunted by painful memories.

Clay finds an unexpected ally, and unexpected temptation, in tomboyish Charlie, the only person who sees beyond his dazzling good looks to the real man beneath. But when Charlie comes to him with an indecent proposal, will they be able to overcome their pasts and find a love that lasts beyond one incredible summer?

This is the 9th book in the Fools Gold series by Susan Mallery. So far it's not getting old. I read this in one day. Lost some sleep but it was worth it. lol You meet the Stryker boys a couple of books ago and this is one inlcudes the youngest, underwear model and but double Clay Stryker. Clay did really well as a model. Made some really good money and went to college for business. Loved and lost a woman he deeply loved. He's decided it's time to move on and do something else. He moves to the family ranch to be closer to family and join the fire dept as a volunteer and start a new business. Problem is no one sees how serious he is. They only see the sexy gorgeous model and think he's all about fun and games and sex or they hope anyway. Clay gets up close and person with resident firefighter Charlie Dixon when she falls on him from a later saving a cat. Charlie is kind of a tom boy but part of the reason she is the way she is is because her mother was a prima ballerina and never thought Charlie was pretty enough or good enough adn was downright just jealous of her daughter. Let her know it at every turn. She is one of those self obsorbed people who think nothing is good enough for them. She also was raped in college and no one believed her so her self esteem and her heart were ravaged on two fronts. Charlie asks Clay to help her be normal whatever that is. She wants to be able to be intimate with a man and at some point either have a child of her own or adopt one. What starts out as help turns into passion and even though neither one was looking for love it finds them anyway. I loved this one. Clay is a sweetheart until he figures out he's in love with Charlie and scares himself.  Clays lessons for Charlie are HOT to say this least.  You have to insert Charlie's mom into the story some too. She finally realizes she alone and she wants to have a relationship with her daughter. It takes almost the entire book for her to get a clue and i wanted to kick her butt several times but she finally comes through. Looks like she's sticking around Fools Gold so it should be interesting having her around. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars for All Summer Long by Susan Mallery.

Book Review: Hot Summer Nights ( Fool's Gold series book 8) by Susan Mallery

Photobucket

Up for pre-order now. Releases June 26th

Wild hearts cannot be tamed…

Horse whisperer Shane Stryker is done with passion. This time around, he’s determined to meet someone who will be content with the quiet life of a rancher’s wife. And the fiery, pint-size redhead who dazzles him at the local bar definitely does not fit the bill.

Small-town librarian Annabelle Weiss has always seen herself as more of a sweetheart than a siren, so she can’t understand why Shane keeps pushing her away. Shane has formed the totally wrong impression of her but only he can help her with a special event for the next Fool’s Gold festival. And maybe while he’s at it, she can convince him to teach her a few things about kissing on hot summer nights, too—some lessons, a girl shouldn’t learn from reading a book!

This is book 8 in the Fools Gold series. Susan Mallery really knows how to start a series and run with it. In this book Shane Stryker ( Rafe's brother from  Summer Days book7) is attracted to Annabelle Weiss the lovely librarian in Fool's Gold. His first time seeing her however she is dancing on the bar at Jo's place and he assumes she is a wild girl who loves attention. Oh boy. Big mistake. In reality Annabelle was stone sober and showing all the ladies in the tavern what the dance of the happy virgin was like.  Shane is the local horse guy. He knows how to do just about everything when it comes to horses. Annabelle finds herself at his families ranch to learn how to ride a horse and then hopefully how to ride one while the horse does a dance. She's trying to raise money for a nice four wheel book mobile for the library and is going to ride the horse in a parade. Shane wants to say no but gets caught up in her and just cant do it. Before long they find themselves in each others arms. Both Shane and Annabelle have had bad previous marriages. Annabelle's worked through her issues and is now trying to be happy with herself and find what she needs in a relationship. Shane on the other hand is still fighting the issues. He keeps comparing Annabelle to his ex wife.  It's starts to look like maybe he's never going to get a clue that his ex and Annabelle are in no way similar. I think it might have been a bit overkill in this area. I was reminded just a little to much about what a witchy cheat Shane's ex wife was but all the rest really made up for. Loved Shane and Annabelle together. Both have beautiful giving hearts. Eventually you have to hope Shane gets it together before he loses it all.  Susan Mallery has a way of weaving a great story while showing you a bit of past ones and future ones. I don't know how she does it but i do enjoy the end product. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Summer Night by Susan Mallery.

Book review: Summer Days ( Fools Gold book 7) by Susan Mallery

Photobucket
Releaseses May 29th

Locked in an unexpected land dispute, Rafe Stryker is trapped in the one place he vowed never to return to – the Castle Ranch in Fool’s Gold, California. He made millions facing ruthless adversaries in the boardroom, but nothing could’ve prepared him to go head-to-head against stubborn, beautiful Heidi Simpson. No one is more surprised than Rafe to discover that he’s finding Heidi – and life as a cowboy – much more compelling than he wants to admit. For Heidi, the Castle Ranch is the home she’s always wanted. After a life on the road, the vivacious blonde has finally put down roots. She won’t give that up without a fight, not even for a man whose late-night kisses make her yearn to be a little less…wholesome. As the two turn from passionate adversaries to passionate, period, they’ll discover that summer love can last a lifetime.

This is book 7 in Susan Mallery's Fools Gold series. We get some fresh faces in this set of 3 books coming out this year. Rafe Stryker left Fools Gold years ago to make his way in the world and be something.  He's forced back to Fools Gold when his mom is swindled by a local man when she tries to buy the ranch they used to live on years ago. Rafe and his family lived on Castle Ranch when Rafe was a kid and when his dad passed away he was forced as the oldest to work hard to take care of everyone. The man that owned the ranch at the time promised to leave the ranch to Rafe's mom. He didn't though he died and they had to leave. Now Heidi Simpson owns the ranch or at least she's making payments. She has led a life as a carny wander around the country with a slightly out there grandfather Glen  to take care of her when her parents died when she was very young. The ranch is Heidi chance for a home. She's got her goats and her small business and she's making it although just barely. The her grandfather sells part of the ranch that he doesn't even own to raise money for a friend who is fighting cancer. That's when the trouble starts. Rafe comes in now all rich and successful to claim the ranch for his mom The money is gone so Heidi can't pay it back. She might lose her first and only real home. The judge decides to make them share for a while and look into the case more and that's when the fun stars. This was a fun book. Like I said there are a bunch of new characters. Heidi was introduced in a previous book but many of the other characters are new along with some old favorites. I've wondered if Ms. Mallery could keep this series fresh. It's looking pretty good she is on a good path for that. I love that Rafe nicknames Heidi "Goat Girl". Normally it's not a cute name but the way he does it, it is. There are some hard lessons some wounded hearts and souls and some fun stuff too. Rafe's mom is a hoot with all her crazy animals she adopts. Can't wait to see where this series goes next! 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Summer Days by Susan Mallery.

Only His (Nevada Hendrix)

October 2011

Wedding bells are ringing in Fool’s Gold, but not for Nevada Hendrix. Her triplet sisters are engaged, and even her mother has a more active love life than she does. Determined to make a fresh start, she applies for her dream job, only to discover that her new boss is her first love. Maybe she could overlook the fact that they’ve seen each other naked, but she’ll never forget the way he broke her heart.

Tucker Janack agrees to Nevada’s “business only” ground rules. After all, love is a trap that the construction millionaire has avoided his whole life. But when great business partners turn out to be so much more, every rule gets broken. Will either of them be willing to try again…or will their past get in the way?

This is book 6 in the Fools Gold series by Susan Mallery. Nevada is the last triplet to find love.Tucker and Nevada have a painful past together. Tucker is part owner is a big construction company that is coming to Fools Gold to build a big casino. Nevada wants a job on that build and goes for a interview to find he is the interviewer and her boss if she gets the job. The past come back to get her with a vengeance when Tucker's ex girlfriend from that painful past shows up in town too. Nevada decides she wants the challenge of the job if Tucker can forget the past she can too and they can maintain a professional relationship. Sounds reasonable doesn't it? The main focus is Tucker and Nevada but there are also her triplet sisters plans to marry and her moms dating and sex life and social lives of her friends. The Fools Gold series is not just focus on one couple they focus on a couple as well as the town and all the occupants. It's always fun to find out about past characters and perhaps future ones. This one made me laugh so many time. Many surprises that made me smile and laugh out loud and shake my head. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Picks stars. Book review: Only Yours (Fools Gold series) By author Susan Mallery

I received a eARC of this book through netgally.com for my honest opinion and review.

Only Yours is the 5th book in the Fools Gold series. Susan Mallery has been building a series around a fictional town called Fools Gold and she even has a website dedicated to the town with pretend real things going on it. You can check it out here www.foolsgoldca.susanmallery.com .

Montana Hendrix has found her calling—working with therapy dogs. With a career she loves in a hometown she adores, she's finally ready to look for her own happily ever after. Could one of her dogs help her find Mr. Right… or maybe Dr. Right?

Surgeon Simon Bradley prefers the sterility of the hospital to the messiness of real life, especially when real life includes an accident-prone mutt and a woman whose kisses make him want what he knows he can't have. Scarred since childhood, he avoids emotional entanglement by moving from place to place to heal children who need his skillful touch. Can his growing feelings for Montana lead him to find a home in Fool's Gold, or will he walk away, taking her broken heart with him?

I love how Susan gives you the town in this series. This book in particular you get bits of the town and it's people along with Simon and Montana's story. Both have alot of emotional baggage. Simon really has the worst of it. A awful childhood and a brilliant mind combine to be a genius surgeon as a adult albeit a very controlled and lonely existence. Simon is afraid to let anyone in. Lucky for him Montana comes along and literally knocks him on his butt. Montana trains service dogs and meets Simon when one of her trainees gets away from her and gets into the hospital on the loose and barrels right over Simon. It will hurt your heart when you find out what happened to Simon as a child to make him the way he is. He is scarred on the outside by terrible burns and on the inside by how he got them and why. Montana has never felt like she belonged like she was ever good enough. Each tries to convince the other how wrong they are about themselves. You get to meet Kent and his son Reese. One of the Hendrix brothers who is divorced and now looking to move back to Fools Gold. Denise is still trying the dating game with some sad and funny results but then there is Max. Is Max THE Max? The one that got Denise to tattoo his name on her hip? hmmmm You have to read this book to find out. You get some updates on some of the other town and friends on Montana too. The end came a little sudden but was good. Wish it had been drawn out a smidge more though. Can't wait for Nevada's story next in October. I give Only Yours 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Picks. Book review: Only Mine (Dakota Hendrix) by author Susan Mallery (Book4 in Fools Gold series)

I received a eARC of Only Mine through netgalley.com for my honest opinion and review.

This is the first of the 3 Hendrickson triplets books in the Fools Gold series. In one of the previous books Raoul observes Dakota upset but we don't find out what is the cause of that. We just get that hint that something is really wrong in Dakota's life. We find out what that is in Only Mine. Might be some spoiler info in my review so read at your own risk.

Her town's lack of men may make headlines, but it isn't news to Dakota Hendrix. The beautiful blonde has bigger problems to deal with, such as overseeing the romance reality competition filming in Fool's Gold. Screening eligible bachelors is a difficult enough task, but Dakota hits an unexpected snag when a sexy stranger comes to town. Finn Anderssen will do anything to keep his twin brothers - the perfect contestants - off the show. Despite Dakota's better judgment, she finds herself drawn to the mysterious outsider. Like her, Finn knows about heartbreak and how a family can fall apart, so she doesn't dare to hope for anything more than a fling. After all, even in the Land of Happy Endings, finding true love is never as easy as it looks on TV

Dakota was upset about something in the last book if you can remember. We never found out what upset her but we do in this book. Due to a medical condition Dakota believes she can't get pregnant. She was devastated at first but finally decides she wanted to adopt. She wants to me a mom. In the mean time Finn Anderssen comes into town trying to get his younger twin brothers Sasha and Stephan to come back to their hometown in Alaska with him. They've run off from college with only one semester to finish up to get on the romantic reality show that Dakota is helping out with by representing Fools Gold. Dakota starts getting to know Finn and they start a relationship of sorts. She keeps Finn from getting himself arrested and sane while he tries unsuccessfully to wrangle his brothers home. She finally gets word she is getting a baby girl to adopt and Finn is a huge help getting her and her new baby girl named Hannah home and settled. Things are going OK then Dakota finds out she's pregnant. She loves Finn but Finn has said he's raised his younger brothers and he doesn't want that kind of responsibility. Now what? Will Finn accept Dakota's love and a family with the baby she's carrying and Hannah or will be opt out and go back to Alaska and forget about her? Must read the book to get that answer. I just loved Finn and Stephan was pretty great too. Sasha was a little immature but he's growing up still so expected. Several times i wanted to give Dakota or Finn a Hug. Can't wait for the next book in this series.  I give Only Mine 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. To find out more about this book series and the author check out the the Fools Gold website www.foolsgoldca.com and Susan Mallery's website www.susanmallery.com.
