Book review. Intimate Enemies by Joan Swan

Photobucket

Intimate Enemies

She is on a quest for answers; answers that could just get her killed.

Six months after the mysterious yacht explosion that killed Cassie Christo’s mother and stepbrother, authorities still have no answers to the cause. Searching for closure, Cassie returns to her childhood home on the Pacific Coast of Baja, Mexico, where she launches her own investigation into the accident. She never expected to find an adversary in the man who had once touched her heart with kindness in her darkest moment.

Rio’s been fantasizing about reconnecting with Cassie for months. But not here and sure as hell not now. As an undercover agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he’s working the biggest sting operation in all of northern Mexico, and he definitely doesn’t have time for the wild attraction he feels for Cassie.

Not only is his cover on the line, so is his heart. Because as the end of a yearlong operation draws closer, Rio knows if he tells Cassie the truth about who and what he is, it won’t only jeopardize his mission, it may result in him losing her forever. And if he doesn’t, his lies and deception could get them both killed.

This is my first Joan Swan book. I was kind of excited to read it as i heard so much about her first book Fever. Which was the first in another series called Phoenix Rising. Intimate enemies is also a first book in a new Covert Affairs series. This baby is a romantic suspense and action packed. Rio in under cover in Mexico when the step daughter of the man he's trying to take down shows up. Cassie is there to make sure her step father gets kicked out of her childhood home. Cassie doesn't realize she's met Rio before. He was at the funeral of her beloved mother and step brother. He held her at the graves while she cried her heart out. She felt something for the man at the time but was too distraught to really look at him and then he was gone. For Rio's part he loved holding her and hoped that when his mission was over there might be a chance to meet her again and maybe start a relationship. Then she shows up at the house in Mexico and from there it starts to all fall apart and quietly drive him mad. Honestly there is danger at every single turn. Packed to brim with action, suspense and romance tucked in here and there. Loved Rio and Cassie and i enjoyed the story. The only thing that bothered me a little was it seemed to at time to much danger. There was constant danger and then a small peak of romance and hot sex. Can't complain about that in the least though.  Now and then it seemed to go on to long. Joan doesn't hold back on the gruesome parts of this either. It really brought it home that this story had a very serious side to go along with the romance.  I look forward to book 2 in this series to see where it goes from here. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Intimate Enemies by Joan Swan.

Book review: All Summer Long ( Foold Gold series book 9) by Susan Mallery

Photobucket

ALL SUMMER LONG (Fool’s Gold #9)

August 2012 ( out July 31st)

Can a summer fling turn into love that lasts a lifetime?

Former underwear model turned entrepreneur Clay Stryker has loved, tragically lost and vowed that he’ll never risk his heart again. After making his fortune, the youngest of the rugged Stryker brothers returns to Fool’s Gold, California, to put down roots on a ranch of his own. But he’s frustrated to discover that even in his hometown, people see him only for his world-famous…assets.

Firefighter Chantal (Charlie) Dixon grew up an ugly duckling beside her delicately beautiful mother, a feeling reinforced long ago by a man who left soul-deep scars. Now she has good friends, a solid job and the itch to start a family—yet she can’t move toward the future while she’s haunted by painful memories.

Clay finds an unexpected ally, and unexpected temptation, in tomboyish Charlie, the only person who sees beyond his dazzling good looks to the real man beneath. But when Charlie comes to him with an indecent proposal, will they be able to overcome their pasts and find a love that lasts beyond one incredible summer?

This is the 9th book in the Fools Gold series by Susan Mallery. So far it's not getting old. I read this in one day. Lost some sleep but it was worth it. lol You meet the Stryker boys a couple of books ago and this is one inlcudes the youngest, underwear model and but double Clay Stryker. Clay did really well as a model. Made some really good money and went to college for business. Loved and lost a woman he deeply loved. He's decided it's time to move on and do something else. He moves to the family ranch to be closer to family and join the fire dept as a volunteer and start a new business. Problem is no one sees how serious he is. They only see the sexy gorgeous model and think he's all about fun and games and sex or they hope anyway. Clay gets up close and person with resident firefighter Charlie Dixon when she falls on him from a later saving a cat. Charlie is kind of a tom boy but part of the reason she is the way she is is because her mother was a prima ballerina and never thought Charlie was pretty enough or good enough adn was downright just jealous of her daughter. Let her know it at every turn. She is one of those self obsorbed people who think nothing is good enough for them. She also was raped in college and no one believed her so her self esteem and her heart were ravaged on two fronts. Charlie asks Clay to help her be normal whatever that is. She wants to be able to be intimate with a man and at some point either have a child of her own or adopt one. What starts out as help turns into passion and even though neither one was looking for love it finds them anyway. I loved this one. Clay is a sweetheart until he figures out he's in love with Charlie and scares himself.  Clays lessons for Charlie are HOT to say this least.  You have to insert Charlie's mom into the story some too. She finally realizes she alone and she wants to have a relationship with her daughter. It takes almost the entire book for her to get a clue and i wanted to kick her butt several times but she finally comes through. Looks like she's sticking around Fools Gold so it should be interesting having her around. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars for All Summer Long by Susan Mallery.

Book review: Forever and a day by Jill Shalvis(book 6 in the Lucky Harbor series)

Photobucket
Available July 31st 2012
LOVE CAN HAPPEN IN A HEARTBEAT

Grace never thought she’d be starting her life over from scratch. Losing everything has landed her in Lucky Harbor, working as a dog walker for overwhelmed ER doctor Josh Scott. But the day his nanny fails to show up, Grace goes from caring for Josh’s lovable mutt to caring for his rambunctious son. Soon Grace is playing house with the sexy single dad…

With so many people depending on him, Josh has no time for anything outside of his clinic and family-until Grace arrives in town. Now this brainy blonde is turning his life inside out and giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “good bedside manner.” Josh and Grace don’t know if what they have can last. But in a town like Lucky Harbor, a lifetime of love starts with just one day…

This is the 6th book in the Lucky Harbor and the last of the second set of 3 books. Grace has been kind of quiet in the series up to this point. You didn't know anything about her except she's new in town and has been looking hard for a job. While looking she's been doing odd jobs. Which is how she ends up walking Josh's crazy dog Tank. Which is how she ends up all wet..... Oh boy. What starts out as a temporary job morphs into something more and then more still. Dr Josh Scott is all kinds of sexy and worn out man. He's got his dads medical practice to run, ER duty and then at home, the dog, his young son and his wheel chair bound sister. He gives new meaning to the words " I've got my hands full." He gets Grace to help and she attempts to figure out where she's going with her life and with Josh. As much as i liked the previous two books i think this might be my favorite of the three. Probably could have said that with every book in this series. Jill Shalvis hits it out of the ballpark again. Josh is just plain irresistible and Grace tries so hard to have a life of her own without influence from her parents. You can't help but root for them. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Forever and a Day by Jill Shalvis.

Jill announced on her blog the other day there will be more Lucky Harbor books and a few details on who they will be about as well. Be sure to check it out and read excerpts for these books as well.

Deep Autumn Heat( Book1 Star Harbor Seb's story) by Elisabeth Barrett

Photobucket

In this sexy new Star Harbor romance series, featuring the too-tempting Grayson brothers, a celebrity chef turns up the heat for a local cafĂ© owner—and things start to sizzle.

Lexie Meyers decides there’s nothing sweeter than watching Sebastian Grayson’s perfect, wicked mouth devour her coconut cake. He’s hot, he’s hungry, and he’s sizing her up like she’s the best thing on the menu. But she’s been burned in the past and flings just aren’t her thing. Too bad Sebastian can’t resist a challenge.

Worldly, famous, and notorious with the ladies, Seb had planned a weekend of fishing and relaxation with his brothers. Until Lexie, with her kissable lips and frosty “get lost” attitude, makes him want to forget his culinary empire and create some magic with her. After he fires up his charm—including challenging her to a televised cook-off to break through her resistance—it’s now hotter in the bedroom than it is in the kitchen and Lexie isn’t sure whether she’s lost her mind . . . or just her heart.

This is Elisabeth Barrett's debut book for Loveswept. I loved the cover of course. Just look at it. I also liked the idea of four hot brothers. A no brainer there too. Now i just hoped the story would be good to go with all that and the great blurb i read. You get to meet the 4 Grayson brothers in the beginning of this book. They all come together once a year to remember and celebrate their dad's life. So sweet! There are two older brother's Val and Cole and then the twins Seb and Theo. All these are shortened versions of their full names. Seb or Sebastian is the main brother for this book. I wasn't sure about the shortened names but they grew on me by mid book. Seb is the world class chef. Has a restaurant in New York City and is trying to find a place in  Boston for a new one and starting a TV show.  He's back in Star Harbor for a few days to spend with his brothers and celebrate his dads life. Seb meets Lexie Meyer then in the restaurant she owns and promptly puts his foot in his mouth. lol He likes her and tries to insert himself in her life. It's fun to watch. Lexie though has a few problems. Her produce supplier is late all the time or doesn't show up. One of her employees is acting funny and then there are the threatening notes she thinks are from a competitor who wants her cake recipe. After she is attacked and Seb saves her though she starts to see that someone is after her. Quite possibly her ex boyfriend who was stalking her the last place she lived.  There's quite a lot going on in this book. It's the first is a series so some of it is just information you need to have although i didn't feel like it droned on at all like some books can. I didn't lose interest at all with that. In the beginning there is a poem about keys and a lock and treasure. You don't really hear much about it though until the end when Lexie finds a key. I would've liked to hear more about that in the story if it's going to be a bigger part of the series but we'll see how it goes in the next book. LOVED the brothers. All very interesting from what you get to see of them. Seb bothered me some because he was a bit immature but throughout the book he grows up a bit and takes things more seriously and that's because of Lexie. Lexie has to learn to love and trust again after her terrifying experience with her ex boyfriend. She's tough as nails though and takes care of herself. Lastly i want to mention a secondary character i really liked. Lexie right hand man in the kitchen Buster. He's kind of a mystery but you get to find out who and what he was before coming to work for Lexie and he's protective of Lexie like she's his daughter and i found that so sweet. I would love to see him meet someone somewhere in this series even as a secondary thing. Overall I enjoyed the book a lot. I am excited to see what the next installment Blaze of Winter brings for Seb's twin Theo. Love the play of words on the titles for this series as well. 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Deep Autumn Heat by Elisabeth Barrett.

Book review: The Claimed (Sin Hunters book 2) by Caridad Pineiro

Photobucket

Victoria Johnson loves her life. She’s her own boss in a quaint beachside town, and has great friends who keep her grounded. If only they knew who she really is: an heiress to an ancient race who possesses astonishing superhuman powers. It’s Victoria’s duty to restore her clan of Light Hunters to their former glory by choosing the perfect mate. In Christopher Sombrosa, she just may have found him. Strong, smart, and successful, Christopher exudes a powerful energy. Their connection is sensual, irresistible-and forbidden.

A member of the Shadow Hunter clan, Christopher has defied his own father to lead his people away from affliction and violence. Yet he cannot ignore his duty to carry on his ancient bloodline. Stunningly beautiful and brimming with an erotic life force, Victoria is everything Christopher ever hoped for in a mate . . . but as a Light Hunter, she’s his mortal enemy. Together, they could unite their warring tribes. But murderous factions on both sides don’t want peace-and they’ll stop at nothing to keep light and darkness apart forever . . .

This is my first Caridad Pineiro book. Book 2 in the Sin Hunters series. I have been told it can be read as a stand alone. Probably possible but i felt like i missed something somewhere. This took me a really long time to read. Longer than most. Victoria and Christopher are future leaders for their clans. Their individual clans have been mortal enemies for years though. What if they could join together as a couple and mate for life? Could they bring the clans together. Could they stamp out the disease permanently that has riddled Christopher's clan for a very long time. While they are sorting out their feelings though a few people are working against them. Jealousy and power push against their efforts to have peace. I liked the book and but had a hard time getting into it. I was right there on the edge but just couldn't quite catch the excitement i hoped for. Couple of the characters bugged me to death. Maya and Raphael drove me nuts. I get that Maya's affinity is sexual but it was to much for me. Perhaps she gets redeemed in the next book. Something was missing from the story but i can't really put my finger on it. The end suddenly came quickly too which through me.  Seemed like we were never going to get there and then suddenly there it was. I would still  like to read book 1 and see where the series goes. 3 out of 5 Modokker Book Stars for The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro.

Book 5 in the Lucky Harbor series. Available now!
HER LOVE HAS COME ALONG…

Amy Michaels loves her new life in Lucky Harbor. A waitress in the local diner, she’s looking forward to her first weekend hike through the mountains. But when a wrong turn takes her off the trail, she finds herself up close and personal with forest ranger Matt Bowers. And even though she’s tempted to kiss that sexy smile right off his face, she won’t make the mistake of getting involved with the town heartthrob.

A former cop whose life went south, Matt doesn’t let anyone get too close. But something about the feisty beauty caught his eye the moment he first saw her in the diner. After a hot night under a starry sky, Matt can’t deny their attraction-or the fact that for the first time in a long time, he feels the stirrings of something more. Now it’s up to Matt to help Amy see that, no matter what is in their past, together they can build a future in Lucky Harbor.

This is book 5 in the Lucky Harbor series. What can i say. I simply can't get enough of this series. In At Last we finally get to figure out what's going on with Amy. Who she is and what she's about. Both Matt and Amy have secrets. Amy had a hard upbringing and Matt has his own hurts to deal with from his past relationships. Strong as he is he still has inner demons to get past. I love how Jill Shalvis weaves a story. Big chunk of Sexy man paired with a tough, smart woman. Throw in some hot sexy loves scenes, some humor and some conflict and watch out. Entertaining from beginning to end. Love that you feel good while reading this and yes get to giggle too! I think it's great how she brings it back to the 3 girls in the trilogy too and then there's the chocolate. Yes!  This particular set of 3 books in the series has a chocolate theme. Need i say more on that? You read this kind of book you want to share with your friends when your done because it's so good you want someone else to enjoy it as much as you did. As the series moves on I love that you get glimpses of the characters covered in the previous books. Makes me want to go back and doing some re-reading. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Picks for At Last by Jill Shalvis.

Book review: Louisiana Longshot by Jana DeLeon (Miss Fortune Series #1)

Review by Sarah Jordan
Photobucket

Publisher's Blurb: It was a hell of a longshot...

CIA Assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever - in Sinful, Louisiana.

With a leak at the CIA and a price on her head by one of the world's largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small, bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she's determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.

Unfortunately, she hasn't even unpacked a suitcase before her newly-inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly-sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she's not careful, this investigation may blow her cover and get her killed.

Armed with her considerable skills and a group of old ladies referred to by locals as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it's too late.

Review: OUT-FREAKING-STANDING! I can't believe how much I loved this book. When I finished it I was really annoyed because I love Fortune and the nutty world of Sinful, Louisiana so much I didn't want to leave them.

Fortune is a CIA assassin whose cover has been blown, so her boss sends her to lay low in the tiny bayou town of Sinful, posing as his beauty-queen/librarian niece who has just inherited a house from her deceased aunt. Fortune has spent her entire life - including her childhood - training for her career as CIA spook/assassin, and she only understands tactics, weapons and missions. The idea of spending months in hiding in a small town terrifies her almost more than the price on her head. Immediately after arriving, though, her life is anything but quiet. She meets two old ladies who are full of surprises, and before she knows it she's teamed up with them to locate their missing friend Marie, whose abusive, jackass husband disappeared years ago. But one of his bones has just washed up on Fortune's back yard, and Marie is nowhere to be found. Everyone assumes Marie murdered the jerk, and her friends want to find her and simultaneously find another suspect to give Marie a chance at beating a murder charge. Pretty soon Fortune is up to her eyeballs in the wacky shenanigans of her two new friends Ida Belle and Gertie, who do not act like little old ladies. They are shockingly prepared for anything, well-armed, running the town, and think nothing of bending the law a bit. And every time Fortune ends up in a compromising position, usually dressed in a towel, or a trash bag and ski mask (yes, you read that right), she is caught by the town Deputy, a hunky, exasperated man trying his best to find Marie also.

Fortune is a great character - she is paranoid, smart and capable, comfortably killing anyone who needs killing, but her solitary live has left her ill-prepared for her budding friendship with Ida Belle and Gertie, and the emotional aspects of friendship. Plus, they seem to be hiding something - a lot of things, and Fortune is never sure just how much they know before they rope her into their next hare-brained scheme. From outrunning alligators on an island that smells like dung, shooting raccoons in her own attic, racing old ladies for banana pudding, or stripping naked to ride in Ida Belle's car, the craziness never ends and it all makes perfect sense.

DeLeon is really funny - I was laughing out loud so many times. Her writing is confident and self-assured, allowing the pace to move along at a fast clip. As crazy as the characters seem, and as nutty as their adventures are, they still seem so real and believable. I really cared about them and hope this is the start to a very long series. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars.

What about your comfort read?

Do you have a comfort read? Your go to book or author that you  turn to when you just aren't in the mood mentally to read a new unknown book?? Do you get out a comfort read when you don't feel good. Keep a pile by your bed?? Are any of those books read so much they are kind of getting a wee bit tattered? Um YES! Too all of it. Right now between reading other new stuff I am reading Saving Grace by Julie Garwood. I confess she is my #1 comfort read author. ANYTHING she's written works for me. I have probably read all her books at least 30 times a piece. Each one. They never get old for me. Some of the authors depending on what i feel i need are Jill Shalvis ( like your surprised) Susan Mallery, Linda Lael Miller (cowboys sigh) Christine Feehan (paranormal) Roxanne St Claire ( again surprised? not) and Cindy Gerard both for Romantic Suspense. These are are authors where i own the majority of their books in paperback and there is a considerable pile by my bed. I put them away every now and then but tend to start dragging them back out again right away. lol How about you? What do you look for in a comfort read??? What makes you feel better?

Book review Jesse ( the Secret Life of Cowboys trilogy) by C.H. Admirand

Photobucket

Jesse Garahan no longer believes in love. Until he meets Danielle Brockway and her tiny daughter, Lacy, on their way to their new home in Pleasure, TX. Danielle’s worthless ex-husband left her high and dry, and now she’s looking for a simple small-town to start over in — and then she meets Jesse. She just can’t seem to help herself where long-limbed, swaggering Texas men are concerned. Suddenly, life is anything but simple.

This is the 3rd book in the Secret Life of Cowboys trilogy by C.H. Admirand. This is also the first book I have ever read by this author. I think it might have been a mistake to read this without reading the first two in the series. After reading this i started to wonder if you needed the first two to get the vibe for this series. I wasn't exactly feeling it. I like the idea of the story but where it goes off kilter for me is the some of the cheesy dialog. When you have to roll your eyes while reading it's not cute and enduring like you want it to be. Loved all the characters especially the uncle and Lacy the little girl but i don't need to be reminded every time that she wearing those pink boots and pink hat and.... well pink. A few things were lost to me and i think it's because i didn't read the first two books. My end impression is liked it but was annoyed with it at the same time. I would still try this author again though. 3 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for Jesse by C.H. Admirand.

Available now.

Book review: Keeping Secret ( Secret McQueen series book 4 ) by Sierra Dean

Photobucket

From authors website:
Keeping Secret

Secret McQueen, Book 4
Coming July 10, 2012

Something old, something blue, something deadly…what else is new?

It’s a nice day for a white wedding. At least that’s what Secret McQueen is hoping for, with her poofy-princess-dress marriage to a werewolf king looming closer and closer by the day. But as ever, nothing can be that easy for a vampire/werewolf hybrid for whom someone still harbors a death wish.

Summoned to the south by her werewolf uncle, who makes no bones about the fact her mate bond with Lucas doesn’t pass muster, Secret learns her furry heritage looks more like a tangled vine than a family tree. Getting her royal uncle’s blessing hinges on finding one of the missing twigs. Even with vampire sentry Holden Chancery at her side, she manages to land up to her neck in a swamp of trouble.

As an assassin’s scope zeroes in, family dramas boil up and a fast-collapsing love square threatens to bury her alive, making it to the church on time could be the least of Secret’s problems.

Warning: Contains a grumpy bride who shouldn’t be wearing wedding white, a motley crew of bridesmaids, a dangerous scenic drive in the woods and a smoking-hot trio of suitors who might be too scorching to touch.

I've been a big fan of Sierra Dean's Secret McQueen series since i read the very first one. I can't believe we are on to book 4 already. I say that after i've been impatiently waiting for each one. I then inhale them in  one big gulp or in this case sitting and then start waiting for more again. Honest to god i never knew where the author is leading me in this book. I don't mean that in a bad way though. I mean it in a very good and devious way. lol Secret has so many love interests you need a map to keep track of them all. I'm always trying to decide which one I am rooting for. Usually it's Desmond but i have to say Holden is really getting to me. I might have to switch over to him soon. Poor Secret is all twisted up over the men in her life. Not that she isn't enjoying them as she's twisting. Thing is in this book she's getting married and someone keeps trying to kill her. Between all the men in her life and her other daily stuff she has to pull off a wedding and not get killed before it happens. The bad guy in this book flew right under my nose and i missed it. Well done Sierra. I should've had a inkling but i was to busy with the men distracting me to see it. One of the best and worst things about this book is the same thing that happens in every Secret McQueen book. It's getting to the end ...it's getting really good and then.... I'm left hanging. What wait!!! What happens next? Those are usually my last words. Nice! 5out of 5 Modokker Book stars for Keeping Secret by Sierra Sean! Loved it! Go Holden! Team Desmond. Just say no to Lucas!!! Which team are you on? Maybe Sig? Lots of hot sexy men in this series to choose from.

Book review: Locked and Loaded by HelenKay Dimon

Guest review by Sarah Conerty Jordan
Photobucket

Publisher's Blurb: Nothing was as it seemed… Not even the protection Maddie Timmons was promised when she'd entered the Witness Security Program. One of her handlers was missing, the other had burned her, and now Maddie was at risk. All that stood between her and certain death was one sexy stranger.

Deep undercover, Recovery Project agent Adam Wright vowed to keep Maddie safe from the leak at WitSec. But Adam wasn't prepared for the confident woman he'd rescued, the sensuous lover who got under his skin. He could do nothing about her past being taken away, but he'd do anything to secure her future …even if it meant forsaking his own….

Review: Locked and Loaded (Harlequin Intrigue Series #1297, and Book 4 of the Mystery Men series following the men of the Recovery Project), was published in August 2011. The Recovery Project is a former government agency that has gone independent. According to the author's website:

"The series follows the men of The Recovery Project, a quasi-governmental operation established to locate missing people – those who want to be found and those who don't. After the Project's cover is blown, and under extreme pressure from members of Congress, the group disbands. But a conspiracy in the Witness Security Program, WitSec, puts the group back in business. The books are an equal mix of emotional romance and heart-stopping suspense. The sensuality level is sexy but not graphic. The books are available in print and digital formats."

This romantic suspense is a great little package, combining a sexy, strong and capable hero, an equally smart and capable heroine, a plot chock full of danger, suspense and a well-crafted romance. Both the main characters are so believable and likeable. Maddie suffers from chronic back pain and does her best to stay in shape to be prepared for her former boyfriend hunting her down. Although she in is the witness protection program she has always planned for the worst, and when that happens she meets Adam, a seriously sexy and deadly protector. She takes a chance and trusts him - a little -and he is shocked at how capable she really is. His respect for her has grown over the month he's been watching her, and when they're under attack he in turn shocks her with his deadly skills. But she doesn't know who to trust, and her growing sexual attraction and affection for Adam is not going to get in her way if she can escape. After a really intense few days - Adam is shot and left for dead, Maddie is sold, and there are firefights and excitement and rescues - Adam and Maddie have given in to their attraction, but Adam doesn't trust Maddie, and Maddie can't live with that. Adam's stubbornness and Maddie's need for Adam to say certain things felt a little awkward and the lovebirds almost break up. Never fear, the HEA is there, and Maddie and Adam quickly work through their issues.

As a new reader to the Mystery Men series I did get confused at times telling the good and bad guys apart, and figuring out the Recovery Project. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I read the series in order, although it was a very good read on its own.

Book review: The Spy wore Spurs by Dana Marton

Photobucket

NO ORDINARY COWBOY Top secret commando soldier Ryder McKay is shot and  left for dead in South Texas. But when he comes to  in a bedroom on Grace Cordero's remote ranch, he realizes  the beautiful former army medic did more than save his life.  She risked her own. Not that he can tell her the whole truth about his mission. Ryder is sure dangerous thugs are using Grace's vast property to smuggle drugs, weapons-and people-across the border. But to prove it without blowing  his cover, he has to let her ride shotgun on the investigation. And keeping his heart guarded against sexy, off-limits Grace  will be the hardest part of all

The Spy Wore Spurs is another great little Harlequin Intrigue from Dana Marton. She always does such a great job with so few pages and this is no exception. This is a quick paced story. Book opens with Ryder McKay in a precarious position that is life or death and who comes to his rescue? That's right Grace Cordero the ex Army Medic who has done two tours in Iraq. Grace happens upon him and saves his life. Ryder is in the middle of a drug smuggling investigation on Grace's vast ranch. She comes back to her ranch that she rents out to a friend so she can scatter the ashes of her beloved brother who died from a illness that came from his Desert Storm service years ago. It doesn't take long though and Grace is embroiled in the investigation which takes a turn when a man and his 2 kids disappear after crossing the border from Mexico with valid visas. The man turns up dead but they can't find the kids. While the mystery slowly unravels Grace fights her inner demons from PTSD and feelings for Ryder. Ryder has been thinking about settling down and finding a woman who can be his partner if everything but doesn't think Grace fits the bill but can't help being drawn to her all the same. At the same time they are fighting a unknown enemy together whether they wish it or not.  I love that Dana shows a strong female character who is dealing with PTSD and not letting it win. She also brings out that Grace's brother was also Army and served in Desert Storm and had what many call Desert Storm Syndrome. This was something i looked into at one time since i am myself former Army and served in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. I love that no matter what Grace doesn't give in and believe me she takes a real licking in this story but comes out still standing in the end. 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars for the The Spy wore Spurs by Dana Marton.
