Book review: Rebel On The Run (Hot Rods #4) by Jayne Rylon

Available now!
Bryce has been keeping a secret. A really big bomb. The Hot Rods have always assumed he’s kept quiet about his family because his childhood was the worst of all of theirs. Considering they’ve lived through druggie parents, abuse, abandonment, and plenty more nightmares, that’s saying something.

Respecting his request for privacy, none of them have ever pried past the guarded shadows in his eyes. After all, nearly all of them know what it’s like to live with ghosts of terrible histories. Better off forgotten. But when Kaelyn DuChamp’s Maserati overheats near the Hot Rod garage, Bryce’s two worlds collide and he’s forced to admit the horrible truth.

He’s a rebel. A runaway from an aristocratic, old-money home…or mansion, as the case may be. Owned by parents who never hit him, or molested him, or ridiculed him. After all, they’d have had to acknowledge him to do that.

After convincing Kaelyn his job at the garage isn’t a joke, or a crazy phase that’s lasted a decade, he can start damage control both with his gang and the girl he’d always thought was too vibrant for her plastic existence. She can’t spill his secret or everything he’s worked for, built and loved will disappear. His family wouldn’t think twice about throwing money at whoever it took to shut down Hot Rods just to bring their ungrateful heir to heel.

Physical versus mental. Refined versus crass. Quiet versus talkative. Bryce and Kaelyn are opposites in every possible way. And you know what they say about that…

Bryce can’t believe how easily the princess fits amidst his garage monkey friends. Soon Kae is emulating all their wild ways. With her hair down, the badass Barbie is more than his libido can handle. Shifting into high gear, he tries to convince her to stay down and dirty with him.

He’s willing to do anything to keep her. Even wear the mantle of his deep, dark, totally privileged pedigree long enough to set things straight.

Another book in the Hot Rod series you can expect some sizzling heat in this book. Bryce (Rebel) has a big secret he's been hiding from his friends for ten years. He doesn't have a past like theirs. He wasn't abused or had a rough upbringing the way all others have. He had a cushy life in comparison. When Kaelyn's car breaks down no far from the Hot Rods home base he just happens to be the tow truck guy who comes to help her. Kaelyn though he deserted her 10 years ago when their manipulating parents said he left for a life of partying in Europe. Brokenhearted that he left her and never looked back she can't believe he was right there still in the same state as her all this time.  Now he has to decide how to handle her. Let her into his life and tell his friends where he really came from or take her and run. While i loved the idea of both their parents people powerful political people i found it a little to easy for how the handled them. What about the guy who was after her to marry her? I wanted just a little bit more before it all worked out. That cliffhanger ending just tore me up in the end though. Oh how i hate those but it won't keep me from reading the next book darn it! One thing about Jayne Rylon you aren't going to wait a year to find out what happens next. June 24th Swinger Style is slated to release. Can't wait.

ARC Book review: The Day He Kissed Her (Bad Boys of Crystal Lake #3) by Juliana Stone

ARC ebook provided by pubsliher through netgalley. Available now!
He can’t wait to leave…

Mac Draper finally has everything he’s always wanted: An amazing career. A New York City apartment. He’s this close to being free of his past forever. But a mind-blowing encounter with the sexy yet tough-as-nails Lily St. Clare has him delaying his plans to put Crystal Lake in his rearview mirror for good.

She’s finally found a place to stay…

For Lily St. Clare the charming small town of Crystal Lake is her haven – a place she can hide from her famous, back-stabbing family. It’s as close to happy as she’s ever been. Until an unforgettable night with tall, dark and tortured Mac Draper gives her a glimpse of what true happiness feels like.

Lily can’t help but melt a little under the sizzling heat of Mac’s touch. But Mac’s scars run deep, and Lily’s afraid she may be falling for the one man who can never return her feelings..

This is the last book in the Bad Boys of Crystal Lake series. I knew from reading the previous books that Mac's book  was going to be the most difficult to read.  Mac Draper pulled himself up from nothing to become a success, to control his life and his decisions.  Lily St.Claire goes to Crystal Lake to get away from her meddling family.  A sizzling hot encounter with Mac and she thinks that's the last she'll see of him. Little does she know he's in Crystal Lake for the summer to help Jake with a project. When they come face to face again sparks fly!  Both Mac and Lily are damaged from their family lives and both struggle with things that have happened to them but most of this story has to do with Mac's life. His father was an abuser and his mother did nothing about it and even stayed with him even after he went to prison. He can't trust himself to not be like his father so he has to stay in control of everything but Lily makes him feel things and he struggles with whether he can be whole finally or if he should just walk away and protect himself. Mac is really quite a ass through the majority of this book and makes it hard for you to like him but i kept waiting for him to come through. I liked Lily but i don't think her family life was explained well enough. She has her druggy sister living with her and then Lily kicks her out and that's it. Its a small part of the story but not enough there for me in that regard. Overall though the book is a great read. The tension and emotions are raw at times and you just want to hug the characters and tell them it will be OK.  I hate to see the series end but Ms. Stone did a awesome job wrapping it up with a hit.

ARC book review: Surprisingly (Playing For Hearts #5) by Debra Kayn

Available April 21, 2014
Ebook provided by publisher through netgalley

Bruce Coldwell, world-class pro bass fisherman, walks into his friend Crista Johnson’s apartment and instantly falls in lust with Crista’s supermodel neighbor. The two weeks of vacation with his best friend will give him the perfect opportunity to dally with the bombshell. Now all he has to do is convince Crista to hook them up.

Excited to have her friend Bruce stay with her, Crista Johnson plans out their whole staycation. But, when he asks her to set him up with a woman she’s trying to un-friend from her life, Crista knows he’s asking the impossible. Janelle is a piranha and only sleeps with other woman’s husbands, and boyfriends, and lives to one up other women.

When Bruce suggests Crista poses as his lover to create the perfect bait, Bruce finds out he might’ve reeled in the wrong fish … um, woman. Hook, line, and sinker!

This is the last in the Playing for Hearts series. I have only read a couple of them so I feel they can all be read as stand alone books. In this one we have professional fisherman Bruce Coldwell and athlete Crista Johnson. Bruce and Crista have been best friends for a long time and when he comes for to stay for 2 weeks she's got plans for what they can do. This all gets blown to bits when he asks her to hook him up with her bitchy gorgeous supermodel next door neighbor. She's been tolerating Janelle her neighbor for the past 2 years she's lived there even though the woman is constantly putting her down and blatantly goes after every married or taken man she sees. After several attempts at setting Bruce up with Janelle and her blowing hot and cold he starts to change his mind about Janelle especially after he sees how she treats Crista.  Suddenly he's seeing a different Crista one he never let himself think about before.  This is a quick paced read. Bruce and Crista have to find their way through this new level in their relationship. Risking their friendship for the possibility of something more. New territory for both but also Crista has some insecurities about herself she has to work through. It was fun to see Bruce have to slow down and really think about what he's doing with Crista and for Crista to really figure out she's worth it and can compete with any woman out there for the man she loves. This book also has a wrap up with all the character from the previous book. That can be a bit confusing if you have not read the other books but didn't bother me.  I never knew fishing could be so sexy!!

ARC Book review: Turned (The Belladonna Agency #1) by Virna DePaul

 photo 18166890_zps702eda84.jpg

Ebook ARC provided by publisher through netgalley
Available now!
Welcome to a mesmerizing world where vampires hide among humans. This centuries-old species has its own rules, code of conduct, and taboos. Only the FBI knows that vampires exist—and although the Bureau agrees to keep their secret, it also plots to give humans the upper hand.

Turning mortals into vampires is forbidden.

But there are creatures who refuse to play by the rules.

Ever since he was turned, FBI special agent Ty Duncan has had one mission: bring rogue vampires to justice. As a recruiter for Belladonna, a shadow agency formed to keep vampires in check, Ty must tap Ana Martin, a troubled ex–gang member and one of the few mortals who can infiltrate places that his kind and the law cannot. From their first encounter, Ty fights a hunger to make Ana his own.

When Ty claims to have information about Ana’s missing sister, Ana has no choice but to trust this captivating stranger who awakens her deepest desires. But as she and Ty climb the heights of pleasure and passion, an enemy is conspiring to destroy them both.

Can Ana help Ty find his humanity in a love that could heal them both, or will their passion lead them into a darkness impossible to escape?

Lots going on in this first book of a brand new series. We've got the FBI and vampires combined together and a complicated story. TY Duncan is a FBI agent who finds himself turned into a vampire along with one of his other FBI friends. While still trying to figure out his new body and not knowing to much about it he joins a new agency that hunts rogue vampires.  Ana Martin grew up with a mother who was no mother at all and eventually found herself in a gang and brought her baby sister along for the ride. When things go wrong she finds herself in prison and her sister gone. Several years later she's now trying to lead a quite life and hopes to track down her sister who seems to have disappeared off the planet. Ty walks into her life and sparks fly between the two but then Ana finds out who he is and what he wants from her and she freaks. Until he offers her the chance to see her sister then all bets are off. She'll do anything for the sister she feels she failed. This is a first in a series so there is always a lot of information put out there for the reader. While that's fine sometimes i had trouble following along and sometimes i don't think i got enough info to follow along. I'm a little unsure of who some of the characters are still, but I'm hoping that will all clear up in book two. I liked the story premise but had trouble now and then with Ty. Although i know he was struggling with what he had become and not knowing that much about what being a vampire means and what he could and couldn't do he felt a bit wimpy at times. Ana was ok but she seemed a bit naive at times for someone who was in a gang and in prison. There is one mystery player that comes to light at the end of the story that seemed a bit out of place and we find out nothing really about him. Again hoping that comes to light in future books. Overall though i enjoyed the book and i like the whole idea and it feels different and new from the vampire books i have read before. I see a lot of potential and look forward to future books in this series. Worth a try for sure.

ARC book review: Taken with You (Kowalski Family #8) by Shannon Stacey .

 photo 18404803_zps335283c1.jpg

ebook ARC provided by publisher through Netgalley
Available now!
Hailey Genest has seen most of her friends marry and have babies, and she's happy for them, but it was a lot easier before she hit forty. She's spent her entire life in Whitford, Maine, and if she hasn't found her Prince Charming by now, she has to accept she's probably not going to. When a new friend suggests they go on an adventure and embrace being single, Hailey agrees.

Surviving in the woods is game warden Matt Barnett's idea of a relaxing vacation. But when he meets two women in need of help, he leads them back to safety - a task that proves more fun than expected, thanks to a certain hot blonde. He can't resist pushing her buttons, even though she's made it clear that the rugged, outdoorsy type just isn't for her.

Hailey is glad to see the back of her tempting-tour-guide-slash-pain-in-the-ass. When he shows up in her life again, she's determined to avoid him, no matter how good he looks in his uniform. But that's easier said than done in Whitford, especially when he's renting the house right next door...

Hailey Genest is 40 years old and thinks by this point she'll never find the right guy. Then comes along Game warden Matt Barnett and his first impression on her is less than stellar but their second meeting when he moves in next door to her perks her interest. They are a bit like oil and water. They don't mix to well. It doesn't stop the attraction between them and no matter how many times they tell themselves they won't work  it seems like maybe they do. Matt who has also been searching for the right woman that can live with his job and his crazy hours and is convinced Hailey is not that woman but time and time again she comes through and defies his expectations.  That freaks him out especially after he totally blows it with her and figures out what he really wants. This really was a excellent book. If could have read it all in one sitting i would have. Unfortunately i had to sleep some and work. The characters are familiar if you have read any of the previous books although some are new and the story is fresh and interesting. I like that the main characters were older as Hailey is 40 and Matt is 35. Kind of interesting with the ages of these two and the man being the younger of the two. I was happy to see a older couple than the norm. The ending is sigh worthy which is just what this book called for. I was happy with the epilogue. Hope to read more from this author and this series in the future.

Available now!
ebook provided by Netgalley and the publisher

Does being nobody's fool mean that you're nobody's love?

Colleen O'Rourke is in love with love... just not when it comes to herself. Most nights, she can be found behind the bar at the Manningsport, New York, tavern she owns with her twin brother, doling out romantic advice to the lovelorn, mixing martinis and staying more or less happily single. See, ten years ago, Lucas Campbell, her first love, broke her heart... an experience Colleen doesn't want to have again, thanks. Since then, she's been happy with a fling here and there, some elite-level flirting and playing matchmaker to her friends.

But a family emergency has brought Lucas back to town, handsome as ever and still the only man who's ever been able to crack her defenses. Seems like maybe they've got some unfinished business waiting for them—but to find out, Colleen has to let her guard down, or risk losing a second chance with the only man she's ever loved.

Kristan Higgins has a way about her writing that just sucks you in and let's you have a good time. This is book 3 in the Blue Heron series but i think you can read this as a stand alone and be fine. Colleen O'Rourke is the town match maker she has several babies named after her because of it. She fun and pretty and the town loves her for all that and her big heart. For all her matchmaking her love life has been non existent for the past 10 years. Her first love Lucas Campbell left her and married someone else. Now though he's back in town to help a dying uncle with his last wishes and it puts him back in front of Colleen and single again.  Confident, cool Colleen has no idea how to deal with Lucas and the feeling it still seems she has for him. Lucas has his own mixed up feelings but he knows there is something between Colleen and himself that he has to figure out. He doesn't belong in Manningsport he think so if they were to get together then what? Colleen is a part of the town and would never leave. It's fun to watch these two figure there way around each other. Add in Colleen's twin brother and her family drama, friends and the town people and there are so many laugh out loud moments. Somehow Kristan Higgins makes you want to keep reading to find out what's funny thing is going to happen next. Colleen gets all the best dialogue.  If you want to just down and relax and enjoy yourself this  is the book you need to read.

Book review: Roman Holiday: The Complete Adventure (Roman Holiday #1-10)

 photo 20945454_zpsd96b5c45.jpg

Available now!
ebook provided by Netgalley and Loveswept for a honest review.

The wait is over with this eBook bundle that includes all ten episodes of Ruthie Knox’s steamy, irresistible serial, Roman Holiday. Like all the greatest road trips, Ashley and Roman’s journey is full of unforgettable twists and turns. But what’s their final destination?

EPISODE 1: CHAINED
EPISODE 2: HITCHED
EPISODE 3: BLINDSIDED
EPISODE 4: RAVAGED
EPISODE 5: IGNITED
EPISODE 6: MISTAKEN
EPISODE 7: RENOUNCED
EPISODE 8: STRIPPED
EPISODE 9: TRANSFORMED
EPISODE 10: CLAIMED

Ashley Bowman has always been impetuous, but even she is a little shocked when she chains herself to a palm tree in the Florida Keys hours before a hurricane is due to blow in. It’s all with the hope of saving her childhood home from a heartless Miami developer. But the moment she meets Roman Díaz she realizes he does have a heart—it’s just encased in ice. Ashley’s determined to get Roman to crack . . . even if she has to drag him all over the eastern seaboard to do it.

Roman can hardly believe he’s been talked into driving across the country with this brazen wild child in a skimpy bikini. He tells himself he had no choice—Ashley insists he meets the elderly snowbirds whose community will be displaced by his career-making development deal. But in truth he knows that there’s something about Ashley that makes him want to get a little wild himself . . . and the closer they get, the more tempted he becomes.

This was released initially as a serial but in quick bursts. I reviewed episode one when it came out and enjoyed it and now that's it's become available as a whole book i wanted to see where it went. Ashley Bowman finds herself alone and adrift when her beloved grandmother passes away. Her grandmother didn't tell her she was sick and she didn't leave her the resort place she grew up at. In fact she sold it long before and didn't tell her. Now Ashley in a fit of grief has chained herself to a palm tree where property developer and the owner Roman Diaz finds her. Roman on the other hand has had a rough life and he's to the point where he thinks he might actually reach his goals but one scantily clad woman is in his way. Ashley convinces Roman to take a road trip with her if she can change his mind about knocking down her resort home by taking her to see all the people she swears it's meant the world too she might be able to save it. Roman feels he has no choice so he goes along with it. It's kind of a love hate relationship at first but each of them is actually on their own little journey of discovery about who they are and what really makes them tick. This is a longer book at over 500 pages but it's  manageable if you break is down by episodes. IF you can manage to set it down that is. I really enjoyed this. The characters are all so different. Nothing is predictable and I love how at first Ashley seems to be the one with it all together but slowly she realizes nothing is exactly as she thought and Roman realizes he doesn't have to control everything and Ashley is the one who shows him that. They both grow together but on the way there are tons of laughs from secondary characters. Even the bad guys in this story aren't what they seem. Ruthie Knox knows how to keep you interested and invested the story. I don't think i have ever read anything quite like it.

Book review: Beyond Solitude (Beyond #4.5) by Kit Rocha

 photo 20639564_zps8dbcb674.jpg

Available now!
ebook received from author in exchange for honest review.

When a motorcycle accident leaves Derek Ford riding a desk at the O’Kane compound, the last thing he needs is a sexy new assistant upending his office and his life. But Mia isn’t scared of her domineering boss. The friction between them generates an undeniable heat—but Mia will not be kept, and Ford will do anything to protect what’s his.

A few notes:

Unlike Beyond Temptation, this story stands separate from the main series plotline, with a tight focus on the hero and heroine as they travel through some parts of the Sectors we don't usually get to show.

This is a awesome little novella that goes with the Beyond series. It takes place the same time as Beyond Jealousy the last book released in this series. Author Kit Rocha give us a little dose of sector 4 to keep the fans of the series appeased while they wait for more. I myself am a huge fan of this series so i was glad to get this extra little bit with two awesome characters. Ford ( as he is called in sector 4) gets hurts in a terrible motorcycle accident and is stuck behind his desk while he heals up the slow and painful old fashion way. He finds himself with a new assistant assigned to him, Mia. Mia is new to sector 4 and is not a part of the gang but was saved from her snake in the grass Patron from sector 2. Now she is hoping to learn how to be a individual and change everything she's ever been taught and maybe fit in somewhere. Although Ford is gruff and a bit on the mean side at first he slowly let's Mia in. Another amazing story from Kit Rocha. The characters are always so real and filled with rich layers.  I don't know how they can keep track of everyone and make each character stand out still.  Somehow she makes her characters vulnerable and strong at the same time and it's a great combination the way that it is done. If you have not read this series you should definitely give it a try. Hope to see more of Ford and Mia in the future books.

This romantic suspense by debut author Lisa DeVore takes you on a thrill ride of twists and turns and when you think you know what's going to happen you find you really don't have a clue. Several times i thought i saw where the plot was going only to have it turn in another direction. While several threats loom over Chase and Jena their niece is acting strange and at the same time they are finding their way back to each other. Everything is not always what it seems though and Chase almost throws everything away for a second time. Very exciting with plot twists to keep you guessing. I look forward to more from this author.
