Review: "Chasing Perfect" 1st book in the Fools Gold series by author Susan Mallery

Anyone who knows my book reading tastes knows i'm a huge Susan Mallery fan. I've done my best over the last year or so to read everything she's ever written. lol Really it's true! I'm like that when i find a author i  really like. I have a huge pile of her books here at home that I've read and well many I've re read more than once. As a matter of fact i just re read Straight from the Hip Tuesday. I have a small pile of some of her older stuff in my TBR pile so like i said i'm working at it. I can't think of even one of her books I've read that i didn't absolutely love. I can't pick a favorite so don't even ask. Susan is out with a new book this week which is the first in a new series. The book is called Chasing Perfect and the series is called Fools Gold. Fools Gold is actually the name of the town where the books in the series will take place and there is a website dedicated to that. You can find that by clicking here. If you're interested in reading this series I'd highly recommend looking that website over. There is plenty of interesting things on there. It will get you familiarized with the series, the town and the people in it. You can even read chapters one and two of Chasing perfect on there as well.

OK how about a little blurb about Fools Gold, CA and Chasing perfect.
Welcome to Fool's Gold, California, a charming community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. There's lots to do and plenty of people to meet, especially women. Because there's just one tiny problem in Fool's Gold: the men don't seem to stick around. Maybe it's the lure of big-city life, or maybe it's plain old bad luck, but regardless of the reason, the problem has to be fixed, fast. And Charity Jones may be just the city planner to do it.

Charity's nomadic childhood has left her itching to settle down, and she immediately falls in love with all the storybook town has to offer—everything, that is, except its sexiest and most famous resident, former world-class cyclist Josh Golden. With her long list of romantic disasters, she's not about to take a chance on another bad boy, even if everyone else thinks he's perfect just the way he is. But maybe that's just what he needs—someone who knows the value of his flaws. Someone who knows that he's just chasing perfect.

Sound good? You can find out more about the characters in this book and the ones currently in the works here at the Fools Gold website. Josh and Charity both have issues with trust and both had less than stellar childhoods. The town of Fools Gold pretty much raised Josh from when he was 10 yrs old and deserted by his mom. Charity's mom didn't leave her but was never there for her so essentially she raised herself.  They have to learn to trust themselves and each other if they want to find happiness. Josh experiences a traumatic death of a friend while racing and it so scarred him he retired from racing. He came back to Fools Gold to give back and silently struggled with his inner demons. Charity tries to avoid him, but finds her attraction to him impossible to not acknowledge it. Finally they get together but there are all those doubts that Charity has and the fear Josh has he's not good enough for her. Want to fine out if they work it out? Read the book! lol There are several things going on in this book that involve the people of Fools Gold which i'm sure we'll see where they go in the following books. This one introduces you to the people of Fools Gold California and gets the series started. There are some secrets to be discovered even in a small town where it's believed there is no way for there to be any secrets. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a fun romance and likes to read series books. Susan Mallery gives us a good start to this new series with Chasing perfect! I give it 5 out 5 Modokker Books Pick stars!

BTW the next book in the series is called " Almost Perfect" and will be out in paperback June 29th

Book review: Working Stiff by author Tori Carrington

This is the last published book so far in the Sofie Metropolis series. I believe there are at least 2 more books in this series to come. Sofie is really getting the hang of being  a PI now. Business is picking up even if her Uncle Spyro is still out of the country on vacation. She hires her cousin Pete to help out. In this book she is asked to find a missing body that disappeared from her Aunt's funeral home and she is also asked to prove the innocence of a young by accused of her killing his girlfriend. He's from the wrong side of the tracks and the girlfriend was wealthy. Of course these things are never easy and there always seems to be someone wanting her stopped. On a side note her dog Muffy is acting strange. It seems like the dogs gone back to the way it was when when his former owner was still alive. Did i mention the black cat? Hmmm lots going on with Sofie. There is also Dino who seems to spending time with Efi Sofie's sister and of course Jake Porter returns as well. Sofie's got to find her way through this mess. Here is a bit of a blurb from the Tori Carrington website.

The week before Halloween, a body disappears from Sofie’s Aunt’s funeral home. It might be a holiday prank, but Sofie’s barely begun to investigate when she’s handed a truly hot case: prove the innocence of Little Johnny Laughton who's on trial for murder! And what happens when sexy Aussie bounty hunter Jake Porter finally takes her up on her many offers?

I have to admit i was a little frustrated at the ending of this book and felt bad for Sofie but I'm thinking that book 5 will fix alot of that. I've got to day this book has plenty of action and story packed in it. You won't be bored. What's awesome here is Sofie is getting stronger and stronger in each book. She doesn't need a man to take care of her and she fights her way to get where she wants to be.

I give Working Stiff 4 out of 5 Modokker Book pick stars. This is the best of the 4 books so far i think. Read the series and make your own opinion though. Happy Reading!

Book giveaway and review: One with the Darkness by Author Susan Squires

Susan Squires is a new author to me. This is the first of her books I've ever read and i wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say i had no clue but once i started reading i was quite intrigued. I've been lucky lately in that several of my recent reads have been unpredictable and different. Makes things exciting when you're not sure how the whole story is going to go. One With the Darkness is the first book in a series entitled  "The Da Vinci time Travel series". OK so I've given away that the books have time travel in them. At this point I've only just read the first one and while there is time travel that is not what the entire book is about.  First let's have a little blurb from Susan's website.

Contessa Donnatella di Poliziano has power, beauty and — as a vampire — eternal life. But she also consumed by regret that centuries ago in ancient Rome, she failed to make her one true love, Jergan, a vampire too. But just as she despairs, the discovery of a 300-year-old note leads her to a gift left by her old friend, Leonardo Da Vinci. He built her a machine to take her back in time to re-write the history of her heart.

Once back in time, Donnatella loses her memory of the intervening years. Yet when she sees the breathtaking barbarian slave from afar, she feels she has always known him. For Donnatella, their awakening passion feels both old and new. But as they fall in love again, the danger of the emperor Caligula’s Rome threatens to tear them apart. The very act of going back in time has changed history and sends events spinning out of Donnatella’s control. Now Jergan’s love for Donnatella, and Jergan himself, must survive the most perilous test, and if he fails, the two lovers will be separated again… for eternity.

Sound intriguing? I thought so too.  The year is 1821 Florence, Tuscany. Donatella has been alive for thousands of years. Lived so many lives with different names. She has one regret in all those lives. Her one true love Jergen was not there with her to share all of them. Donatella is a vampire you see with a immortal life. Jergen was once her slave a captured warrior that she saved. They fell in love but the laws of her people dictated she could not make him a vampire so they lived one life together and then she was alone. All she had to remember him by is their son Gian.  One day Donatella finds a note from her good friend from years ago Leonardo Da Vinci. He says he has what she needs to find  happiness again. Curiosity gets her to go check out what he's talking about and leads her to the catacombs and a time machine. She decides to see of she can get it to work and suddenly she finds back in time. Back when she was called Livia and right before she was to meet Jergen. Can she relive the events and change history? It won't be easy. First of all she is not just Livia she is also Donatella as they somehow merge to be one person. She doesn't remember the past really just these little blips of memory thanks to Donatella but she doesn't trust it. Then she is also knee deep in a plot again the Roman emperor that may lead to her death and those of her friends. Then there is Jergen. She feels something but isn't sure of herself. There is alot going on in this book, you won't be bored.  I give "One with the Darkness" 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars!! An exciting read and indeed quite different.  You can go to Susan Squires website to find out more about this book and the series itself by clicking here.  I suggest you do this, it's very interesting.

Book Review: Foul Play a Sofie Metropolis novel by author Tori Carrington

OK Foul Play is the third book is the Sofie Metropolis series. Sofie is starting to get the hang of the PI business. This time Sofie is asked by the wife of Reni Vanezuela Star Mets pitcher to investigate what's wrong with him. Oh he is not sick or anything but he's not acting quite right either. Sofie is figuring he is like alot of the other investigations she's done and he's cheating on her. She decides to take on the case and find out for sure. Then there is the Greek baker Dino who Sofie is very attracted too and in turn he is attracted to her as well. She wonders why she couldn't have met him before that disastrous wedding fiasco. Then there is elusive Jake Porter. He seems to have disappeared but will he back and what did she feel for him. She decides to give Dino a whirl so to speak but wants everything hush hush because if her mother finds out there will wedding invites out first thing and she's no where near ready to go there yet.  Here's a little blurb to wet you appetite.

In FOUL PLAY, Sofie’s searching for a couple of hot prospects, one in her personal life and one professionally. The New York Mets might just be on their way to the World Series, but their newly signed pitching phenom has disappeared with the playoffs fast approaching.

As for her personal life, Sofie’s hooking up with a gorgeous Greek who is every bit as hunky as her long-time crush, Australian mystery man Jake Porter—and a lot more available.

See how things pan out for Sofie when you read Foul Play. I've really been finding these books interesting. there is alot of interaction with all the characters and alot going on so there isn't a dull moment. This isn't really a fluff book Sofie really puts herself out there and she doesn't look for a man to protect her. You learn alot of Greek terminology and at the end of every book are some Greek recipes to try out. I give Foul Play 3 1/2 Modokker Book Pick Stars. Give it a shot.

Review: Dirty laundry, a Sofie Metropolis novel by author Tori Carrington

Dirty Laundry is the second book is the Sofie Metropolis series by author Tori Carrington.  In this 2nd book Sofie is still finding her way as a PI. Uncle Spyro is still out of the country so she's on her own unless you count Uncle Spyro's silent partner she can hardly get a word out of him and then there is also Rosie the detective agency's secretary. Sofie has to track down Uncle Tolly who has disappeared from the Dry cleaners he owns with his wife.  It starts to look  like maybe Uncle Tolly was doing more than laundry perhaps at the dry cleaners and that's where the mob comes in. That puts Sofie in touch with Tony DiPiazza, who coincidentally she went to high school with. Now he's very interested and attracted to her but also makes it known he wants her to stop investigating Uncle Tolly's disappearance if the goons following her mean anything.  To add to all this her mother tells her she suspects her dad is cheating on her and wants Sofie to find out the truth and she also needs to find a missing ferret for a little girl. she can't seem to get away from the missing pet cases even though she keeps trying. lol  Oh and Jake Porter is back working on her car and giving her kisses. Below is a little tidbit to get you interested.

Sofie Metropolis is the newest P.I. on the mean streets of Astoria, Queens. She’s known for her trademark frappes and her itchy trigger finger. She even shot one of her own clients!

Well, he was trying to kill her at the time . . . .

In this second title in the Sofie Metropolis series, Sofie’s hot on the trail of a missing pet ferret and a missing dry cleaner who appears to have been laundering much more than clothes...

Which is where the mob comes in, in the darkly handsome figure of Tony DiPiazza. Tony’s very taken with Sofie. Too bad she won’t back off the money-laundering and kidnapping (or is it murder?) investigation.

Really too bad, since hunky Australian bounty hunter/man of mystery Jake Porter is hanging around again, tinkering under the hood of Sofie’s car and kissing Sofie like he really means it, only she’s too busy to notice.

Sofie’s quest for the truth gets her into hot water—and a pair of cement overshoes. It’s not her best look.

What do you think? Pick up this book to find out what happens to Sofie this time. If you did not read the first book Sofie Metropolis that's OK cause these can be read as a stand alone but i recommend reading them in order if you can. Click here if you'd like to read a excerpt of the first chapter. You'll have to scroll down to get to it. The excerpts always get me. lol  I give Dirty Laundry 4 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. Well worth reading. Hope you'll check it out. If you do let me know what you think.

Review: Sofie Metropolis by author Tori Carrington

Sofie Metropolis is the first book is the Sofie Metropolis series by author Tori Carrington. Better knows as Lori and Tony Karayianni a husband and wife writing team. In this book we get introduced to Sofie. Sofie is supposed to be getting married but she catches her maid of honor and her groom going at it in the church right before the ceremony. Needless to say the maid of honor who was her best friend is no longer her friend and her soon to be husband is no longer soon to be anything associated with her. Sofie finds herself working for her Uncle Spiro in his detective agency. Now she is Sofie Metropolis PI or she will be officially in a couple years when the state of NY tells she can legally add the PI to her name. lol  Anyway how about a little blurb to get you in the spirit?

On her wedding day, right before the ceremony, right there in the Greek Orthodox church, Sofie Metropolis discovered her groom and her maid of honor in each other's arms. Sofie took this as a sign, and since then, she's been doing her best to confound her own, and her family's, expectations.

First, she is no longer waiting tables at either her father's or her grandfather's dueling Greek restaurants in Astoria, Queens. Second, she kept the engagement ring (the garbage disposal choked on it) and all the wedding presents, including the small apartment building that was a gift from her parents.

Sofie also has a new career, thanks to uncle Spyros's detective agency. Okay, so far, the cases haven't been all that exciting-mostly, Sofie's been tracking down lost pets and cheating spouses-but at least she's in control of her life. And even Sam Spade had to start somewhere.

Tailing a wayward wife, Sofie is caught in a shoot-out and is rescued by Australian man-of-mystery Jake Porter, who might be a bounty hunter and who definitely gets Sofie's engine started...

And what is Jake Porter doing in the middle of Sofie's adultery case anyway, and why is the cheating wife now on the run?

Get your juices flowing? I thought so. In this book Sofie is learning what a PI has to do to solve a case even if those cases just involve missing pets. Then there is the possible cheating wife that suddenly goes missing. How about sexy Jake Porter? That man is a mystery that will keep you guessing what he's about throughout the entire book. This book is part romance part Sophie finding her way after a devastating blow in her life and well a bit of action and comedy too. Plus you can learn a little about Greeks and food and well maybe even vampires??? You'll have to read to see. This was a great intro into Sofie's world. A quick read in Hardcover at only 280 pages this was first published in 2006. There are 4 books total in the series so far with 2 more to follow for sure one of which will come out sometime this year according to the Sofiemetro website. Pick this one up for a little adventure and mystery.  click here to go to the Tori Carrington website and there you can also go to the Sofiemetro website and learn about all things Sofie. I give it 4 out of 5 Modokker Book pick stars.

Book review: Heiress for Hire by author Erin McCarthy

I kind of stumbled upon this book at the library a couple days ago. I was returning a book and waiting to as one of the librarians a questions so i was browsing the new release section. Heiress for Hire is not a new book but this is the area i found it in but it's all good anyway. lol  It was actually first released in 2006. I recently read 2 other Erin McCarthy books and enjoyed them so when i saw the name on this book i had to check it out. I am actually drawn to a cover first sometimes and the cover on this book is really appealing. Bright and fun!  Which can describe the writing in the book as well. This is one of those books once you start you don't want to put it down til you've read it to the last page. Which is pretty much how i read it. If you want something light but fun with a great story and romance mixed together this is the book you want. I truly enjoyed it from cover to cover.

Amanda Delmar is a Chicago socialite who decides to spend her summer in Cuttersville a haunted town in Ohio. She's having a pretty good time until her dad cuts off her money. Amanda has to get a job asap. She meets Farmer Danny Tucker and he decides to help Amanda find a job unfortunately 2 days on teh job at the local beauty salon and she is already fired. Danny find out he has a 8 year old daughter he never knew about and guess what she likes Amanda and Danny desperate. Desperate for Amanda and desperately needing a babysitter for his daughter so he can work the farm and his carpentry job. He can't believe he's asking a heiress to babysit his 8 year old daughter. Even though Amanda appears to be a shallow society girl he sees something else in her eyes, sadness and a few other things. While Amanda is helping with his daughter Danny decides to try and figure out just who Amanda really is.  Oh and don't forget the ghost his daughter can see.

Want to read a excerpt? Click here. This is a heartwarming wonderful funny story. A little mix of everything! I give it easily 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick stars. Get it!

short review: Angels' Judgement by author Nalini Singh

If you want a intro to Nalini Singh's writing this is a good place to start. Angels' Judgement is a novella within an anthology book called Must Love Hellhounds with 3 other authors. If you want to read Angels' judgement you have to look for the book Must Love Hellhounds as the title. First this story goes along with the two other Guild Hunter series books out there already. You should read the first one Angels' blood then read this one and then Archangel's Kiss. That's just a recommendation though on my part. Angels' Judgement is about Sara. How she became the Guild Hunter Director and how she met Deacon ,and man he is sizzling hot!  I don't want to give anything away because the story is so short but if you want to read a unedited advance excerpt of chapter one you can go to Nalini's website and read it here. This story actually takes place before Angel's blood. Deacon is the slayer for the Hunters Guild and he must track down any Hunter gone bad. Sara gets paired up with him to find a Hunter supposedly gone bad but she doesn't know that Deacon is also supposed to be protecting her from any Archangel who might be sending lackies to test her ability to be a Guild Hunter Director. I think you need to read the story to see where this all goes. It's fast action throughout and Sara and Deacon have great chemistry. Takes about 2 minutes to decide you just love Deacon. 5 out 5 Modokker book pick stars for sure on Angels' Judgement!

Book review: Blaze of Memory by author Nalini Singh

Nalini Singh is not a new author for me. This book though is from the Psy-Changeling series which is totally new to me. This is book #9 in the series i believe. The first one i've read and if you know me i generally start at the first book if a series in involved. Thing is it's not easy to find a Nalini Singh book in the rural area i live so when one of the libraries i use had this book i grabbed it! It's the only one they had in the series too unfortunately. Ok so i read this book without the benefit of reading the 8 books before it. I plan to remedy that as soon i can. Let's start with the teaser on the back of the book.

Dev Santos discovers her unconscious and battered, with no memory of who she is. All she knows is that she’s dangerous. Charged with protecting his people’s most vulnerable secrets, Dev is duty-bound to eliminate all threats. It’s a task he’s never hesitated to complete…until he finds himself drawn to a woman who might yet prove the enemy’s most insidious weapon.

Stripped of her memories by a shadowy oppressor, and programmed to carry out cold-blooded murder, Katya Haas is fighting desperately for her sanity itself. Her only hope is Dev. But how can she expect to gain the trust of a man who could very well be her next target? For in this game, one must die…

Sound exciting? It is! This series is set in the future so you have to keep that in mind when you read this book. There are a lot of techy thing in there to make it exciting. This book is a paranormal romance and quite different and exciting. I would suggest reading from the first of the series because i had to read this a little blind and i know alot of the things that i didn't really get i would've had i read the other books first. Katya is found dumped on Dev front door and unconscious. Dev is the charge of a group called Shine cover for The Forgotten a group that escaped from PsyNet years ago. He must protect his people from every threat.  Is Katya a threat or a victim or perhaps she's both? Katya can't remember anything at first but as she starts to remember she believes she is a weapon Dev enemies want to use against her. Funny thing is the longer Dev is around here the more he feels protective of her the more he needs to be with her. The characters in this book all have different kinds of abilities. Some of this i had a hard time getting because i started reading so far in the series. Even with some of the confusion i had i was riveted to this wanting to figure it all out and see where Dev and Katya were going. It starts to look like there is no way for Katya to get any kind of happy ending and i thought it was going to end one way but went a totally different way in the end. The story was fast paced and also had lots of twists and turns that it kept you wondering. I don't mind predictability in a book sometimes but when you can't figure it out it's alot more fun isn't it? I really would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal romance or wants to try something different. I would though suggest you start at the first book in the series. I give this book 4 out of 5 Modokker book pick stars.

REVIEW: Hard and Fast my author Erin McCarthy

I recently reviewed the first book in this series "Flat out Sexy". You can scroll down to find that. I read this second book first and then went back and got the first one. You can read either of these alone but it's always better to read them in order in my opinion. Hard and Fast is the second book in the Fast Track series. I'm not sure how many books will be in this series but i do know a third is in the works. This book like the first has got alot of flat out hot and sexy love scenes. Enough to scorch your panties in the reading of it. That said. we meet Ty and Imogen in the first book but the second is their book.  First how about a little blurb from the back of the book.

An experiment in romance!

New to Charlotte, stock car racing country, graduate student Imogen Wilson meets Ty McCordle, a driver who inexplicably has her pulse racing. After an encounter at the track with a woman whose main goal in life is to marry a driver, Imogen realizes she’s hit on the perfect thesis for her Sociology degree. If she follows The Rules on how to get a man, can she steer her way to into the hearts of the drivers and establish their dating, and mating, patterns?

That’s testing the limits of passion.

Although sexy and reckless Ty is the ideal test subject, she knows she can’t pursue him for the sake of science. Yet he’s the one who’s chasing after her, and Imogen realizes that she actually wants to be caught. A southern gentleman like Ty won’t fail to disappoint, will satisfy all her curiosity, and make all the risks worthwhile!

Wow so what do you think? Let me fill you in just a bit more. Ty has a secret? He keeps that secret from everyone. What is it? hmmm should i tell you? OK OK i will. He is dyslexic. He's been getting by for years with help from his assistant who is the only person who know he is dyslexic. He fakes his way thru things the way he does for years and doesn't want Imogen to know because he's embarrassed because he think she's so smart and beautiful he thinks he'll lose her if she knows. Imogen has a secret of her own. She needs to write a thesis for college and guess who is going to be the star of said thesis. Problem is she likes him. She loves spending time with him. She also has a problem in she thinks she's average and not very attractive.  Ty thinks otherwise. Finally when they proclaim their love and Ty confesses his secret a series of misunderstandings ensues and suddenly it's over. To find out if and how Ty gets his woman back you have to read the book!  Click here to read a tasty excerpt of the book.

What i liked about this and the first book is well is the real things Erin McCarthy puts in. You don't often hear of the hero having dyslexia and Imogen has glasses, also not something most characters have. This may be a erotic hot sexy book but it's got alot of real qualities and ideas that go with it. I really enjoyed it. Look for teh third book "Hot Finish" due out august 1, 2010. You can read a bit about that book here. I give hard and Fast 4 out of 5 Modokker stars. Out of the two so far i like the first the best but Hot Finish is about Ryder and Suzanne and i am betting that one will be awesome. To find out who Ryder and Suzanne are read the first two books! Hot Finish (Fast Track)

My my my! Book review: Flat out Sexy by author Erin McCarthy

Oh yes! My my my is the correct words for this book. This is the first book in the Fast Track series by Erin McCarthy. I actually read the second one first and then went and got the first one. So glad i did. This is a awesome sexy, fun, flirty book.

Here's a little blurb from Erin McCarthy's website.

Independent single mother Tamara Briggs wanted to find a new, sexy, no-strings-attached man-just not one as young as NASCAR driver Elec Monroe. But he sure does get her heart racing. And after she’s tricked into a blind date with him, Tamara gives in to her passion. Things screech to a halt, though, when he asks to meet her children. Whatever happened to wham-bam-thank-you ma’am? Suddenly Tamara has to decide how much risk she’s willing to take to experience the power of true love.

There is plenty of hot sex scenes in this book but it's so nicely balanced out with a good story and lots of laughs and giggles too! Tamara Briggs is a widow with 2 young children. Her husband Pete Briggs was a race car driver who was killed in a tragic accident at the track during a race. Since then she's done her best to take care of her kids and get thru life as a single parent. Finally after 2 years she decides to try and get back into the dating scene. She starts out with a dud but then literally runs into hot sexy Elec Monroe. She doesn't realize at first he is also a race car driver and that he is 6 years younger than her but by the time she figures that out it's to late she is hooked on the steamy racer. Elec is the youngest of the Monroe sibling and a rookie at the track. After Tamara literally runs into him at a party spilling her wine all over him he can't help but be intrigued by the beautiful lady. After a bought of hot sex he's wants to see her again. First he's got to get past all the things Tamara thinks is wrong with getting involved with him. There is her 2 kids, her Father in law who has been feuding with Elec dad for years, the age gap, and her heart she's guarding from losing another mans he loves in a racing accident. Kind of a steep wall to climb but Elec decides he's going to find a way. i swear i loved this book. I sat and HAD to read it in one evening.  It's 274 pages all filled with lots of great reading. I giggle and laughed out loud several times and had to keep turning the pages. Once you get to the end you get the treat of reading a preview to the second book Hard and Fast about Ty and Imogen that you meet in the first book. The third book will come out in August and that is going to be about Suzanne and Ryder. I look forward to that. I give Flat out Sexy 5 out of 5 Modokker stars. READ IT!!!!
